Yes, the Flyers may be heading towards a playoff berth, but that doesn't mean that this is the same team we will see next October.

Looking ahead, who do you see heading out the door....and why....and how?

There is the obvious UFA who is not offered a contract.
There is the less obvious RFA who is not qualified, or whose rights are traded.
There is the one year left on a deal who is dealt at the draft.
There is buy out.

IMHO: Big name that will be gone could well be Wayne Simmonds. He is signed for one more year at a relatively friendly rate...but he will want a BIG raise. He could command a major (think no less than Schenn) return. Bit of a risk/reward move. It would clear a roster spot and cap space but it would take his leadership out of the room.

Less big would be Gudas and or Manning. I think Manning may be the more likely for the simple reason that Gudas is right handed and so many players praise his example/work ethic. Manning gets similar praise, but he left handed, he is not a better player than Hagg or Sandheim.

The entire Goaltending situation is in flux as far as I can tell until Hart faces real NHL fire.
The plan when signing Elliot and resigning Neuvy was to bide time...well, time is nearly up.

What are your thoughts?

We have both Elliot and Neuvy signed through next season so their time will be nearly up April 2019.

Guys like Filppula, Read, Manning and Oduya will be UFA's and very likely not offered new contracts. That's mostly addition via subtraction of dead cap weight.

I assume Hagg will be offered a contract as an RFA. Other RFA's like Leier, Stolarz, Morin and Lyon are question marks though.

Gudas just isn't playing well right now and yet he has two more years on his deal. I would not be surprised to see him traded away. A guy like Myers will probably be a better option than him by then.

Simmonds, it's tough to say, but if the right deal comes along, I am sure he will be traded away.

The intriguing part of all of this is that we will have around $20 million in cap space to spend. Normally we're a team that will spend that extra money, so where does it go this time around?

I look at Simmonds as a worthy rental type player. I think the time is right next season to hold on to him. If you decide not to re-sign him in the summer, so be it. But they don’t really need cap space as mentioned and if you trade him away in the summer what are the chances you’re looking for someone like him at the deadline. I say keep him.

I expect only one of Stolarz and Lyon to get a contract. And I expect them to serve as the backup NHL goalie next year with Neuvirth sent down. He’s just not reliable enough to be counted on. He can mentor Hart.

Don’t see why they’d qualify Leier at this point. Hagg and Morin they’ll certainly sign.

Oduya, Read, Filpula, and Manning will be gone. Wouldn’t be shocked if they buyout Lehtera too.

I think Lindblom could take his roll on the PP, He's a big body and seems to have some decent skills.I would at least see what you could get for him in return.

I think Patrick has already shown he can do it.

Did a little more research today (what is Good Friday for if not researching NHL Futures).

Goaltending:
Yes, Neuvy and Elliot have one more year. Yes, Stolarz and Lyon are RFA's and both Sandstrom and Hart are incoming entry level players (if Sandstrom comes over from Europe which is very much in doubt). Mrazek is as good as gone. He is not consistent enough. At his best he is as good as Neuvy at his best, but...he is less likely to be on that roll. I could honestly see Sandstrom stay in Europe, both Stolarz and Lyon resigned going into camp and Mrazek allowed to walk. Expect Neuvy to go bye bye...trade, most likely for conditional pick(s).
That would leave Elliot as 1a with either Stolarz or Lyon as his back up with the other as the mentor for Hart in the AHL as long as it takes him to get used to being a pro.

Forwards:
Fillpula and Read are gone. Not a surprise to anyone.
It is the Simmonds question that still lingers to me. Also, expect something to happen with Weiss and Lehtera. They don't fit. It was a good idea, get some two way players with some size and a modicum of speed and skill and grit, but, and this is not a knock on either player, they don't fit in. I could see either or both gone in conditional pick moves or as part of larger deals that have the Flyers taking money back.

Defense:
I don't even consider Oduya a Flyers. No offense, he was an insurance policy and I don't think it will mature.
I see Hagg and Morin being resigned and Manning not. That makes six NHL dmen (AMac, Provorov, Ghost, Hagg, Sandheim, Gudas and Morin) Expect another one of the Phantoms or an as yet to be aquired player to either push for a top 6 role or as the insurance player.

Forward - Filppula and Leier (possibly by trade) gone. Read re-signed to a cheap 1 year deal due to his PK chemistry with Couts which they clearly missed. Flyers sign a new short-term veteran 3C. Frost could force someone else off of the roster.

Defense - Oduya gone. Manning and Hagg re-signed. No other changes. Morin/Myers will get their chance at some point during the season if either can stay healthy.

Goalie - Mrazek gone. Flyers will be hoping one of Stolarz, Lyon, Hart or Sandstrom (both scheduled to sign pro deals, although Sandstrom could be loaned back to Europe) steals the show in camp and leads them to waive or buy out Neuvirth. Otherwise, they start with an Elliot/Neuvirth tandem. One of Lyon or Stolarz (or their rights) will likely be dealt.
