How I would format an 8-team playoff schedule

Lets forget for a second how the teams would be selected. Personally, I think an 8-team format would be PERFECT for college football.

2017
Conference Championship weekend - December 1st and 2nd

Army-Navy Game - December 9th

Bowl Mania #1 weekend - December 16th

Round One - December 22nd and December 23rd

Round Two - January 1st

Round Three - January 12th (Friday night) or 9th (where it was currently).

Basically all the playoff teams would get at 20-22 days off to rest up and game plan. This would give them MORE time off than FCS playoffs and D3 playoffs.

We would play the first two rounds on campus sites. This gives an incentive to win more, play stronger schedules, and win ones conference.

Final round gets played at one of the six BCS Bowl sites. You can rotate every year.

College football programs would be playing up to 16 games in a season. But we would be giving them a two-week bye in December and you could push the championship game to January 12, giving them an 11-day break between the 2nd and 3rd round.

I can't see how any college football fan would disapprove or how the system wouldn't be doubling their profits.

Pretty much how I expect it to happen.

You play the first round before Christmas, and the second and final rounds like they happen now: New Years and the weekend or Monday afterward.

Not going to happen.

It's shitty anyway.

And it's not going to increase profits, the college playoff contract lasts until 2026 and you are just taking money away from other areas.

I think an 8 team playoff happens sooner rather than later, would make for a fairer playoff system too IMO.

Even an 8 team playoff wouldn’t have included UCF.

And would have included two, two loss teams and one, THREE loss team. I'm sorry, I'm just not on board with an 8 team playoff. Regular season games because formalities for teams that rarely lose more than 2 games a year. Wisconsin would get to scoot through the B10 West every year and make a playoff spot. We'd regularly see 3 loss teams in there. Just stupid IMO. I'd much rather have the controversy around who gets into a 4 team, than diminish the regular season games and add 4 more.

Here’s how ridiculous the 8 team playoff is, I’m agreeing with Michigan AND Alabama fans.

Well I'll be damned, you aren't 100% stupid.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend is an ancient proverb which suggests that two opposing parties can or should work together against a common enemy. The earliest known expression of this concept is found in a Sanskrit treatise on statecraft, the Arthashastra, which dates to around the 4th century BC, while the first recorded use of the current English version came in 1884.[1][2]

The proverb is sometimes phrased as "my enemy's enemy is my friend."[citation needed]

To answer the original question...given the current situation of movement.

You would take the Top 4 teams from the SEC East Division and the Top 4 teams from the
SEC West Division.

The quarterfinals would be cross-bracket match-ups...

Game 1 E#1 vs W #4
Game 2 W#2 vs E #3
Game 3 E#2 vs W #3
Game 4 W#1 vs E #4

Wk 2
Game 5 Game 1 vs Game 2 winners
Game 6 Game 3 vs Game 4 winners

Wk 3

Game 7 Game 5 winner vs Game 6 winner

That should pretty much do it.

There’s not 8 teams in the SEC East.

That's horrible. Alabama would probably only win 25% of the national championships instead of 50%.

Why is it stupid that a 3 loss team gets in? I think you have to open it up, it will also give smaller schools some opportunity.

Teams with less than pristine records make the post-season in every other sport, at every other level of team sports. Except for college football. Where for some reason... you have to be unquestionably "elite" and near perfect to get in.

There's a team or two EVERY year. That would have a legit title shot kept out of the playoff on an annual basis. That's bull shit. If a team or two per year also get in, who don't have a shot. If that's true, they'll be ousted. Just like in every other college sport, and in all professional sports.

Because you are giving the spots to teams who are less deserving.

Smaller schools do have opportunity. They can play tougher schedules, which is not hard to do. Many of the smaller schools do it every year. However, what you don't see are such teams playing those tougher schedules and winning those games at the same time. There might just be a reason for that.

Teams with less than pristine records make the post-season in every other sport, at every other level of team sports. Except for college football. Where for some reason... you have to be unquestionably "elite" and near perfect to get in.

This is actually what makes college football great and it sucks that people who don't understand the sport come in and want to change it.

There are 130 teams in FBS football, and only a 12 game schedule, 13 games if you make a conference championship game. Every game is like a playoff game in the regular season and any single loss can be the loss that eliminates you from the national championship picture. AND IT'S AWESOME THAT WAY.

In 2013, Alabama loses to Auburn on a FG return. That game puts Alabama out of the National Championship picture, and Auburn goes on to play FSU. As an Alabama fan it sucked, but as a college football fan that is awesome. Games have the same hype and meaning as the playoff games in the other sports.

This is not the NFL or other sports where you have less teams and way more games. The NFL has 32 teams, and 16 games. See the difference? Each NFL team plays the same team in their division twice. And look at what the NFL has had to do with putting division games in the final weeks just to add meaning to those games because everyone was taking those weeks off. We don't want that shit in college football.

No, there really isn't. Once again, 130 FBS teams. You are talking about teams who mostly play the bottom tier of teams all year long and put up good records. They are not on the same level as other teams, which is why as I mentioned above - you never see them play tough schedules and win them. They might win a game every now and then, and usually when the other teams doesn't prep enough - that's why they are upsets.

And these teams sign up for this. It's what they all vote for and choose, they are not victims. They can all drop down to FCS level and get in that playoff if they want. But they want to compete at this level and they know what the deal is. New teams come damn near every year as well.

No one questions AT ALL if an 'unworthy' team would at some point actually win a playoff. That just isn't the point even a little bit.

12 game schedule with almost everyone playing at least two derps so really it's 10 games at most you are really looking at. No other sport you mention is that trim in the setup for a large playoff.

It's such a short season that the regular season IS the playoffs. Most don't seem to get that. It used to be nearly a one loss elimination guaranteed. Lose and you are out. Isn't that how playoffs normally work? Then they added some meat at the end by having contenders add another round with conf championship games which presumably gives them something more than a cream puff. And now we pair up the top 4 and tell them to win two more decent match ups.

It just isn't broken in any way.

Less deserving of what? This line makes no sense. Technically, the team you vote in as the #2 seed, is less deserving than the #1. So... you must specify further.

Every game is like a playoff game in the regular season and any single loss can be the loss that eliminates you from the national championship picture. AND IT'S AWESOME THAT WAY.

Yes, let's make sure that somewhere around 90% of teams in our sport are playing meaningless football the last few weeks of the season. Probably half of them or more for the majority of it. How phenomenally entertaining. (I like college football, but this aspect of it is very silly)

Teams who could possibly be the best team in the country. Could win the national title. "Oh well... we'll never find out, I guess." DISGUSTING. You're making it sound like people want to open it up in some huge way. They just want that aspect of it to stop. You'll get an 8th seed every once in a while with very little shot against the #1, but if it lets the dangerous and deserving #5 and #6 team in. It's more than worth it.

And look at what the NFL has had to do with putting division games in the final weeks just to add meaning to those games because everyone was taking those weeks off.

It's only for Week 17. That also was not the reason.

They wanted a higher chance of a winner-take all divisional games in the final week. The couple of years prior to putting that rule in, there had been a few that came about due to happenstance. They were hugely successful games from an interest and ratings standpoint. They wanted more of it.

We don't want that shit in college football.

Who is "we"??? I am speaking as a fan as well.

No, there really isn't. Once again, 130 FBS teams. You are talking about teams who mostly play the bottom tier of teams all year long and put up good records.

Wrong.

I am talking about major conference schools. The OSU's from this year. TCU from 2015. Those kind of teams.

they are not victims.

Straw-man. I never said that.

I am becoming offended by how poor your counter-argument is. You have done a horrific job of addressing my points.

They can all drop down to FCS level and get in that playoff if they want.

Lol... Yes, SEC, Big Ten, Pac-12... etc... teams dropping down to the FCS.

Again. You have done a fine job here of addressing nothing. No one is calling them victims. No one is saying schools are getting "screwed". We're talking about what might be best for college football, as fans.

Stop using "we" when you reply, if I may make a request. You're not apart of the NCAA. You're another dumb fan, like myself.

It's broken because there's already been a couple of years where the difference between #4 and #5 is non-existent, more than 4 teams could legitimately win it all and you let a group of guys vote on it. Basically even resumes, and it's not even decided on a football field. If you're the 70th best team in the country in college basketball, that's one thing. However, when you're 11-1 or 12-1. You won your conference, and are one of the best in the country. Give me a break.

By letting in 8, maybe you get a 3 loss team here and there. However, all legitimate contenders get to play it out and decide their own fate.

I guess I don't understand what it hurts.
