I like Urias a lot, but that is a scary injury to come back from.

Had no idea it was that serious. Only 5 other pitchers have had the surgery and only 1 came back to pitch effectively. He's still very young though so I'll hold out some hope. He definitely had the talent to be a great pitcher in the MLB.

Padres Extend A.J. Preller

going all in a few years ago didn't go well at all, but I think he's done a good job rebuilding the farm. I am a bit surprised that he's lasted this long given how poorly things went and considering the suspension in 2016. That Myers extension is questionable though, he's a 1B with a career 110 OPS+ and has played two full seasons.

I wonder if part of the reason they extended Preller was to show Ohtani they were serious about the plan they have in place, but it doesn't really matter anymore. His crazy 2014 winter meetings to go for it turned into shit but the farm might be better now than it was before then. I knew there was a high fail rate with that Myers contract because Padres, although it's just one season in and he can get better. He's trying to improve his mental approach this offseason, we'll see how that works out. Not sure how I feel about the Padres going after Hosmer which would move Myers to the OF, I like the idea of signing a high caliber FA but worried his contract season isn't sustainable.

A lot to be excited about there, including a potentially very solid MLB starting rotation in the top 10 along with their 2B/SS duo of the future with one possibly being in the middle of the lineup. Still at least one year away for the Padres to contend for a WC spot which sucks but it's part of the rebuild process.

I really like some of the younger Padres I saw last year, optimism may be warranted

Question I've been thinking about, so many teams are doing the teardown/prospects/lose a lot/be patient model the Astros (and Cubs) perfected...isn't the Moneyball move (the underpriced zag to everyone's zig) to be the seller into that prospect frenzy?

Margot and Lamet were probably my favorites to watch, while Renfroe with his power/arm and Hedges with defense/power had some bright spots too. I'd much rather they have this group of prospects over most or all other teams' prospects so the optimism is there, but I don't wanna get my hopes up only to be let down again. Actually fuck that, time to go full optimistic homer.

They made an interesting hire in Dave Cameron. It's cool to see him getting an opportunity with an MLB club, he's done a lot of good work at Fangraphs.

I read earlier that he's not a fan of Eric Hosmer, wonder if this hiring will impact their efforts to sign him.

Yeah, it's pretty funny... at least as an outsider. But I think it says a lot that Preller's hiring someone that has differing views (in a good way).

He's not surrounding himself with only yes men who will agree with everything, I like it. Doesn't mean he'll do everything Cameron thinks is right, but having different opinions should help them make smarter decisions.

Fangraphs just dropped their 2018 ZiPS projections for the Giants. It shows a lot of positive regression for the lineup and a damn good infield. The Bumgarner projection is weird given the nature of his injury (dirt bike incident).

While I kinda agree with the conclusion, I am not a huge believer in ZIPS. It is just someone’s WAG as to what player A will do in the future.

While I expect some positive regression, the team as a whole has still played like dogshit for 240 games. And Eva’s bother is not going to turn that around.

Yeah, you're not getting MVP-caliber Longoria, he's long gone. His OBP skills/power have regressed along with his defense, though his glove is still pretty decent. He's still a good player and provides a big upgrade over the collective black hole the Giants had at 3rd last year.

2018 ZiPS Projections – Arizona Diamondbacks | FanGraphs Baseball

ZiPS project considerable regression for the D-Backs. Pitching should still be among the best in the NL, but four of their positions project to be below average (LF/RF/2B/C). Even the 3.4 projection for Pollock seems a bit high given his injuries. He's a good player for sure, but it's hard not to be concerned about a guy that's missed over a season's worth of games over the last two years. They should still contend for a WC spot, but the Dodgers look like a much better team.

2018 ZiPS Projections – San Diego Padres | FanGraphs Baseball

The position players project to be pretty decent. The rotation... not so much. I honestly had never heard of Lamet until now, the strikeout rate makes him interesting.
Having an average offense after being one of the worst would be a nice surprise, hopefully Margot/Myers/Renfroe/Hedges show some improvements and consistency as they are the 4 most likely position players to still be around and starting when the Padres are pushing for the postseason.
Lamet has shown some great potential but having more success against LHB and limiting the walks will be key to him taking the next step, he could fit in as a 3/4/5 starter in a few years but right now he's the "ace". The rest of the SP is meh.
I think the Padres have the potential for a really solid BP with Hand, Yates, Maton, Makita, Stammen, Baumann, and Capps if he could stay healthy.
I'd say best case scenario for the Padres is finishing the season at .500, but closer to 70-75 wins is more realistic.
