Neuheisel thinks Tui should be at the top of the list for OC fwiw, but then that was one of his kids back then so yeah.

Tui is a fine QB coach, but I don’t think he’s ready to be an OC. And he has about 0 ties to Petersen.

Why not Norville?

I don't know. Proximity to Graham most likely? Or maybe he would want to bring his coordinators. It's hard to say. Maybe he just doesn't want to bounce of Memphis.

Apparently it actually is Edwards and Anderson had this lined up probably all year and one of the conditions will presumably be retaining the coordinators.

They're reported to be long time friends so I think baring some dream candidate agreeing to this behind the scenes the past couple weeks, Herm was going to get this job no matter what. Sumlin was probably a better overall choice, but I think he wasn't all that interested in the job. The speed in which he puts a staff together will say alot. He probably already had his ducks in the row with certain positions ready to go. He will need some recruiting studs.

For ASU to really succeed, you got to recruit:

Keep the best talent from instate. Put the wall up.
Hit California hard.
Augment the classes with talent from states like Texas, Hawaii, and find some hidden gems in tSEC country.

From what I've read, Graham had a bad rep with many local Arizona H.S. coaches. Flat out ignored certain good programs as well like Saguaro H.S. who produced Trent Murphy and many believed it would of been ASU to beat for his commit. They're one of the top talent pools in the state, but Graham completely ignores the coach and the program, and so there you go, he commits to Washington. As an AD, you've got to feel those kind of massive wiffs at the real difference makers that could end up on your program.

That and besides some early success, the program has been mediocre under him the past couple years. Absolutely mediocre. I don't blame the AD. ASU should aim higher than 7-5 records with a well established coach.

Will Herm do a better job? Time will tell. But I think it was time to mix things up a bit and make some bold moves to improve recruiting and the product. Graham had worn out his welcome.

I don't think it's likely and I'm not sure how I would react. Just saying that's RN's top candidate and he was pretty strong in that belief. We know he's a solid recruiter and no one would fight more for this school than him, but he's unproven as a caller/game planner for sure. RN believes he has been at this long enough and learned enough from some solid staffs he has been around along with his overall football smarts to take the ball and run with it.

I wonder if Tee Martins performance will give people second thoughts about hiring Tui as OC for big program without doing it at a lower school first. Helton seems to love Tee but most of the fans have not been impressed. I think this time will serve him well for the future but I could do without being the program he learns to be a good OC at.

I don't have much of a problem with Tee. I agree that his inexperience has shown at times, but we also had a qb throwing to an all new receiving corps and, due to injuries, playing behind a patchwork o-line for most of the season.

Despite those issues and Tee learning on the job, we have a 10-2 record, a chance to win the PAC and the offense is averaging 38 points per game. I hope he stays and we get to see what he does next year with a season under his belt and hopefully, Darnold back behind a healthy o-line and throwing to experienced receivers that he trusts.

I hear you but every season is important and can become something great with some breaks and while I dont think he cost USC games I think USC could have looked better even in their wins with better playcalling and I think he was ill prepared for the rush WSU would dial up in that loss. Now he wasn't the issue when the rookie receivers were dropping passes but I think he constantly put Darnold in bad situations with unimaginative calls on many first and second downs especially on the goal line. His reluctance to put Darnold under center on goal line situations where you just need a yard or two is just frustrating. Having a back run six-seven yards when you need a half a yard I don't Get. When it's the other way around and we need a yard to get out of the endzone he will put Darnold behind the center but not when you need a yard to get in? Doesn't make sense. And when you have a QB under center it makes the other team guard against a power run between the tackles which makes play action effective. I'm not upset he's coming back I'm hoping he learns quick. he's got weapons most OCs could only dream of. He's got to learn how to use them.

Agree and disagree. He definitely showed some inexperience in some of his playcalling. But I've seen more seasoned OC's do a lot worse. I mean shit, do you want to see bubble screen after bubble screen again? lol

I also think you have to take into consideration the injuries and the fact that Darnold was throwing to an all new receiving corps. They were planning on using the tight ends a lot to get through that, but Imatorbhebhe took much of the season to recover, and if memory serves, Petite was in and out of the lineup all season with various injuries. That affects the plays he can call and the success of the ones he does.

I love Clancy, but I actually have more of an issue with his limited rotations on defense than with anything Tee did.

This perplexes me as well. But not just with USC. It seems that most teams in cfb do this and I just don't get it. The only explanation that I have seen that even remotely makes sense is that college qbs spend so much time in the shotgun that it makes the exchange more difficult when under center...but to me, that's what practice is for.

Your DC won't be loving Hilinski, he loves him some brain dead Falk and noodle arm Bender.
Falk wasn't your problem. Not at all. We watched entirely different games if you think a change at QB alone makes ANY difference at all in the outcome of that game.

It's not hard champ. When you rush 3 and STILL get sacks/hurries/knockdowns you win. UW had 8 in coverage against 5 receivers/backs/TE's. THAT'S why you couldn't move the ball.

Vita Vea was your problem. He broke double and triple blocks and still got to Falk. No QB can beat that.

Clancy needs to realize he's not coaching an NFL defense. These kids will get tired and nicked up more than a professional and not giving the backup meaningful snaps makes him ill prepared when he is forced to come in. Yes he's got 4 and 5 star guys in many positions but playing them every snap makes them less effective at the end of games where it's really hot or you're playing a physical team. I'd rather have a fresh 3* kid in there learning and spelling the starter once in a while and if an injury happens that backup is ready.

One thing I havent seen much this season that would have helped Darnold is the check down to the back when he's gone through his first two progressions and they aren't open. The last two games I attended I took a friend of mine who was a HS QB at the time Todd Marinovich and Rob Johnson were seniors. My friend won ALL city honors over them . Too bad he's only 5'10. lol. But he mentioned that Darnold rarely dumps it to the back when every ones covered. He either tries a tough throw or he runs. He said you might only get three yards but it makes the third down more manageable and could have extended drives.

If true, then the PAC has filled its 2 HC openings. UW has a OC position to now fill and Beavs have an entire staff to build. Same with ASU.

If Taggart bails for FSU, then the Ducks will have to start over again, but I bet their already working a list of names and preparing. They will have a ton of work to do to rebuild the class. Expect a bunch of decommits.
I would guess Jim Leavitt the current DC

And there it is:

Washington co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jonathan Smith will reportedly be the next head football coach at Oregon State.

Danny Moran of the Oregonian reported the news.

Smith, 38, has served as an offensive assistant at Washington since 2014. He was the Beavers' starting quarterback from 1998-2001, leading them to a Fiesta Bowl victory in 2000.

Good hire for the Beavs at this point. I wish him success as long as he's not playing the Dawgs. There are plenty of Huskies who speak low of him, but I still find it hard to rag on a guy who helped us go to the playoff last year and 10-2 in 2017. Browning has the pass TD record and Gaskin the RB TD record. Smith was heavily involved in those performances.
I'm sure Coach Petersen has been preparing for this and I'm sure the next OC will help continue what we've built.
WOOF!!!
Wait... what happened to Baldwin?

I'm not necessarily bummed that Smith is put, but grass isn't always greener...
