Back in the day, many people placed great value on reading the runes, tossing dem bones, etc. to gauge what the future holds.
Myself, I abide by my NFL freezer mugs.
I have 8 of them. 2 Dallas, 1 each of Bears, Steelers, Redskins, Raiders, Patriots, Cardinals. 5 at a time reside in my big second fridge freezer door downstairs. And there are strict rules that apply.
They enter the rotation randomly. If I’m the only person using them, they get a good rinse and put back in the space they came from on the door. If company comes, one will get a good wash and put back to freeze, but when company is finished, it goes upstairs for official cleaning and goes out of the rotation. Similarly, if I happen to take one upstairs before dinner when I’m BBQing, it too will stay upstairs for an official washing and leaves the rotation.
Official washing means they go to the shelf in our storeroom till space is available. And one comes off the shelf and replaces it on the freezer door.
The mug next up is the first mug on the freezer door with a different handle rotation. If all 5 are same direction, I take the first one. If the third mug has the different handle rotation it is the next mug up.
Substitutions are not allowed. Next mug up is next mug up. This is important because Dallas has never won a game when I’ve used a Dallas mug. I get a sinking feeling if I notice either of the 2 Dallas mugs could be in play on a Sunday. The Hindu Hex is strong on the Dallas mugs.
The Steelers have won one game while I’ve used my Steelers mug. The Bears never win anyway so they are a space taker upper. Patriots have won a few while using them, Raiders too. Redskins are a hapless bunch but I love the logo…. I’ve killed the Cards several times with their mug in play but they once beat Seattle while I was using it.
Last week it was especially warm where I live. I usually have 4 brew during a weekend happy hour, sometimes 5.
I started the Happy Hour with my Patriots mug. It was a 5 beer day. The Patriots mug couldn’t hold it’s cold. I had to bail on it during the 3rd beer.
I go to the fridge for a second mug and the next mug up was the Raiders. Beer #3 was dumped into it, plus 4 and 5.
The Raiders mug held it’s cold to the end and could have gone longer.
I take this as a sign that the Raiders are the next team up should New England falter in the heat of the playoffs.
I have faith the Patriots will win out.
But dammit, the freezer mugs never lie.
