X's and O's: The 3-4 Defense

Disclaimer: This is all just random off the cuff unorganized thoughts. Pardon me if it's all over the place.


I don't pretend to know a huge amount about the 3-4, but I have been watching the Chargers run it for a long time so it's not a foreign concept to me.

Highly theoretical here...

NT - No one. Unless you Burn Valentine's RS you don't have a prototypical guy. MAYBE randle but the guy is clearly hobbled... Curry maybe. I pray Baker is not actually the guy there.

DE - Williams, Moss, Steinkuhler, Meredith

OLB - Martin, Ankrah, Moss (if he can learn it.. doubt it), Carter

- Defensive ends responsibilities could change drastically or not at all. Ends can still play contain in a 3-4, but what you will commonly see the end doing is attacking and trying to collapse the pocket. A 3-4 end is typically bigger... It's possible we will be playing some of our traditional "defensive tackles" at the end spots.


-I'm really having a hard time thinking up 4 linebackers on our roster who are capable of playing a 3-4. This is why this is such a confusing move. Giving our thinnest position on the team even more responsibilities makes zero sense to me.

I think the changes will not be this drastic. This is all out panic mode if we actually start switching up personnel and learning a brand new scheme (That Bo has seldom-if-ever coached) and technique 2 games into the season.

The move could be just more of Bo's switching things up and see what works, personnel and scheme wise. I have no complaints for trying new things when the current jam isn't playing out well. The 3-4 is still a 2 gap scheme, but variations include a 1 gap such as the Chargers/Cowboys, in either event you still need big ass DT's and capable LB's to run it, neither of which currently stir our Kool Aid. Interested to see what variation comes out this Sat.

I still find it hard to understand how Rome could blow away one year of illegibility over hurt feelings. He didn't blow me away with his performance this year, nor did he blow up opponents offensive play-making. If his replacement is worse than him, he would have been right back into the mix, but he couldn't accept his new role on the team.
