I think a lot of people thought Egypt, because of Salah might advance as Russia hasn't looked that great in the last few years, but others, like myself, figured Russia would advance one way or the other. Most host countries (except South Africa) make it to the knockouts either by over achieving or home cooking refs.

I'll give Kane credit when it comes to PKs, he doesn't do it lazy or half assed. Both of those were rockets even if the GK guesses right they're hard to stop.

The deflection credited to Kane was humorous, but hey sometimes the ball bounces the right way for you. Any way you look at it, he's delivered for England so far.

There is often a boost to a decent team on having home cooking. But I always remembering the potting that FIFA does for picking the pools that has a certain impact.

Russia did not get pooled in with any of the Top 7.
Russia got the second worse seed in Pot 2.
Russia got the third worst seed in Pot 3
Russia got the worst seed in Pot 4.

Putting the host in Pot 1 is a given.
Advantages on picks for Pot 2-4 can be debated as any level of conspiracy, I guess. I cannot remember if they pull the numbers live or just tell everyone live what the picks were (suspicious as hell).

All that said...Russia had a feel good against Egypt (30th- way overinflated) and SA (63rd). And they ran into a 17th seed (albeit without their best player playing) and hit the skid today.

They should likely get Spain or Portugal in Round 2....and you just can't feel good about that if you have been feeling the Russian team so far. Not a bad run for the team that was the worst seed (65th) at least going into the group picks a while back.
