Sabonis is a very good player and he can spread the floor, shooting well this year but the Pacers got a guy that is more important to building a team. A tall PG that can score and facilitate at a high level. They just need to build around him now. Both teams won overall though.

He is still gonna get paid as a RFA.

So enlighten us when was the last TIME Indy actually used their cap space to sign a FA that was a difference maker?

They haven’t.

Which is why they trade for Haliburton who they can control for the next 5 years.

And yeah they have to pay him. But he is actually good enough to be worth an RFA max. He is an all star.

This isn’t the same as trading a guy like Colin Sexton who nobody wants to give max money too.

3 people voted for Sac and 4 said it was a wash to 2 for Indy.

But, as usual Lance is always the smartest man in the room.

SMH

I can’t help it if people are wrong here.

Reality is, neither team is likely to be better than first round exit.

But give me the young star potential player on a rookie deal every time. At least gives Pacers a chance to build something better.

Exceedingly rare those players are even traded at all.

A step to where?

They aren’t going anywhere anytime soon

Saying it is a step implies that they have somewhere to go beyond making the playoffs.

Tell that to the "We Believe" Warriors. One of the most electric times for me as a fan.

And it is fun rooting for an underdog team.

Still don’t think that makes it a good idea to trade away a 2nd year player with all star potential.

If they traded Fox for the same return I would be inclined to say Sacto won the deal.

Most organizations don't have the ability to just wait and see. Some need results. Also you have to factor in the financial impact that this will have. Winning team = higher revenue. More ticket sales. More viewership. More merch. And that playoff revenue helps too.

NBA is also a business.

Yup.

Indy won this deal.

A fox/sabonis type deal would’ve been more of a wash and still made sense for eveyone

It probably costs the kings monk in the offseason though, but a small price to pay

Indy is setup well with burton and math.

Curious how the front court develops and what they decide to do with turner

On a macro scale think about it like this

Say in 84 the Rockets had taken Hakeem 1 and Portland had taken MJ 2 despite having Clyde

Then in 86 the Blazers had sent MJ and a 2nd rounder to Houston for Hakeem

The Rockets would've gotten the best player in the deal BUT the Blazers would have prime Clyde and prime Hakeem

So who would've benefited the most??

Obviously none of the guys in this deal and on that level but you get the point

Haliburton is a beast but Fox is really fucking good and now they get him in his natural spot and a legit all star level player to go with him

Long term we shall see but there's little doubt at all that the Kings are much much better now than they would've been if they hadn't made that deal

The Kings have no shot to contend and the just gifted Indiana their franchise player so they could make a play in game.

That is horrendous management and why the Kings are where they are every single year.

Your Pacers won the deal by a lot. Be happy.
Eh. The argument could be made that Sac should have traded Fox instead, but Hali was not their franchise guy as long as Fox was there.

Pacers may have gotten the best player in the deal, but we're still stuck in purgatory with a brutal schedule in front of us. Assuming Hali gets signed to a megadeal and possibly Turner as well (can't just let that guy walk if he reaches FA), the Pacers won't have great financial flexibility moving forward.

Also a little concerning that Carlisle still doesn't trust Mathurin to start.

They should be looking to move Hield.

anyone who is willing to trade a first for gordon should be doing the same for hield.

I get what you are trying to do with that analogy,

But the problem is Sabonis is 4 years older and 2 years away from FA.

Maybe Sacto resigns him, maybe they can’t. If they aren’t able to, they are definitely big time losers in this deal. And even more likely, if they do resign him to massive deal in 2 years, he becomes a bad contract before the ink dries.

My issue was never the quality of players involved. It was trading a budding star on a rookie deal.

I agree.

sabonis is a really good player but his skills don’t translate the same way. Without rim protection or spacing it’s hard to work as a max or close to max level c

I mean yes he's 4 years older

But he's still only 26

He's not even in his prime yet. Nor is Fox

Admittedly, Sabonis is younger than I thought he was.

But 26 is most definitely prime.

For a center? Nah

I personally don't think 26 it's prime for anyone but certainly not a center

Sabonis isn’t a typical center.

He is very polished and highly skilled.

26-28 is athletic prime for most men.

Not saying he can’t get better still, he he is highly unlikely to take major leaps forward in his game.

It isn’t like he was some raw big learning how to use his body when he entered the league. He was NBA ready when he was drafted. Just blocked by some pretty good bigs his rookie year in OKC.
