Two players in the first round?

Our first ever first round player was Ryan Clady.

Some projections have Martin going to Denver at 25 and McClellin going at 27 to the Pats................

McClellin looks set to go in round 1

Martin's the question.

Sounds like a good fit for Martin.

TAMPA, Fla. -- General manager Mark Dominik and coach Greg Schiano just spoke about Boise State running back Doug Martin, who they drafted with the 31st overall pick Thursday night.

Funny, but they described him pretty much the way they did when talking about Alabama safety Mark Barron, who they took at No. 7 overall. They described him as a leader, team captain and a guy who played for a very successful college program. In other words, he fits the profile of the new "Buccaneer Man."

Doug MartinKirby Lee/US PRESSWIRENew Bucs coach Greg Schiano is excited about "the totality of what" Doug Martin can do.
That’s great. The Bucs needed to add things like character and leadership. They also needed to add something to a backfield that had LeGarrette Blount and not much else.

Schiano used the phrases “all-around back’’ and “the totality of what he can do’’ in describing Martin. That’s significant. Blount has some good qualities (power running), but struggled as a pass blocker and receiver the past two seasons. Schiano also used the term “three-down back’’ about Martin. In other words, Blount will still have a role, but Martin is going to spend more time on the field.

Schiano smiled as he was asked if Martin reminded him of Baltimore’s Ray Rice, who he coached at Rutgers.

“I do see some of it,’’ Schiano said. “To tell you the truth I do. I see a guy who runs hard and plays hard.’’

There was one other ulterior motive in giving up their second-round choice and a fourth-round pick in return for the right to take Martin at the end of the first round, while sliding down to later in the fourth round.

Dominik pointed to the new collective bargaining agreement. In that, first-round picks can sign five-year contracts. Players taken after the first round can’t sign deals longer than four years.

Sounds like the Bucs are planning on having Martin around for a long time.

One of these days, we'll learn our lesson about Phil Emery.

All of us -- media members, fans and executives on other NFL teams -- need to stop acting as if they know what the Chicago Bears' new general manager is up to. Emery has now pulled two significant surprises in his first offseason with the Bears. His March trade for receiver Brandon Marshall was anticipated by no one, and his decision to draft Boise State defensive end/linebacker Shea McClellin was among the top surprises of the first round.

McClellin fits the pass-rushing profile that many of us thought the Bears would target, but many draft analysts considered him best suited to be a 3-4 outside linebacker. That's why we thought Illinois defensive end Whitney Mercilus was a better fit for the Bears. As the Bears' No. 19 pick grew closer, I wondered if they would target Stanford guard David DeCastro, a beast who figured to be off the board long before then.

But here's our mistake: None of us have any idea how Emery thinks and where his values lie. That's a bi-product of a career-long low public profile, one that hasn't exactly sprouted since the Bears, and it's worked to his advantage on a number of occasions already.

McClellin was a late riser in the public's eyes, and many of us thought he fit into the Green Bay Packers' possibilities at No. 28. But obviously Emery, and probably defensive line coach Rod Marinelli, saw something in him that spurred them to grab him then and there.

In the big picture, the Bears addressed one of their most important needs. Their starters in 2011, Julius Peppers and Israel Idonije, each played more than 80 percent of the team's snaps. That's way too many, especially for Idonije, who is best suited as a swing end/tackle. You have to figure McClellin will eventually take over the defensive end spot filled in 2011 by Idonije, most likely in time for Week 1.

The sporting public had the right role targeted but the wrong player. Welcome to the Phil Emery Era.

well the pundits don't coach and Shea said his workout with the Bears went really well so obviously they see something the pundits don't.

Pundits: Perplexed by McClellin, impressed by Martin

On TV and the Web, NFL Draft analysts have expressed at least mild surprise that the Bears took Boise State defensive end Shea McClellin at No. 19. Most saw him as an outside linebacker, but he will play end for the Bears in their 4-3 scheme. ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. called the pick a "slight reach." On the other hand, analysts seem impressed by the Buccaneers' decision to trade up and take Boise State tailback Doug Martin at No. 31. Tailback was a major need for the Bucs and they took Martin at the point in the draft where he was expected to land. Tampa reportedly made a play to trade up for Alabama's Trent Richardson and, when that didn't work, the Bucs made a move to get the No. 2 tailback in many analysts' eyes.

Both Boise State players were coveted for their versatility and are considered "four-down players" — guys who can play in any situation on offense/defense and make an immediate impact on special teams.

heh

Don't tell me Coach Pete doesn't pay attention to the draft :)
Boise State coach Chris Petersen addressed the first-round selections in a statement. Boise State is the first non-BCS school with two first-round picks since Jackson State in 2000, according to ESPN.

“Shea and Doug’s selection in the first round is a testimony to the hard work and commitment they have shown throughout their career as Broncos,” Petersen said. “We are excited for both players and know they will do an outstanding job representing Boise State at Chicago and Tampa Bay.”

How many times do you think "THE SUCKER PUNCH" is going to be shown in Tampa the next year?
