You never saw the '87 Lakers play.

Not sure about that. They played in a different era where more contact was acceptable.Today they would be getting called for fouls left and right. Plus the overall talent level in today's NBA is higher than in the 80's therefor players are also playing against more talent than the players of the 80's were. Same goes for every sport.
