The ending paragraph sums up their take, which is players have never been more skilled at the offensive end (combined with spacing rules and 3 pointer emphasis). Apparently it's not pace or more free throws:

"What we are watching this season is amazing stuff. It's not about the defense. Or the foul calls. Or the pace. It's about a league that has never been more stocked with all-time offensive talent. I, too, miss a lot of things about the 80's and 90's era NBA game. But from a pure skill standpoint, I can't imagine a better time to be an NBA fan."

Yeah, people complaining that there is no defense are flat wrong.

The offense is just so overwhelmingly good today.

Fun time to be a basketball fan.

The way things are going now, it wouldn't surprise me to see a lot more 60, 70 maybe even 80 point games in the future.

Not a bad thing though.

I disagree. I think a substantial increase in those kinds of games would not be a good thing. Those kinds of games are special, that's why we spend a lot of time talking about them when they happen.

Simple, yeah they are cracking diwn a littke on traveling but the rules still favor offense. The defender can’t do much without getting called.

Addressed in the article, it's not more free throws

It's not necessarily about free throws.

There are things players used to be able to do that they can't anymore because they're no longer allowed.

For example, players can't be as physical on defense anymore, so they aren't, which makes it easier to score.

Add in that players now focus more of their attention on scoring and less on defense as they are developing their games, scores are going to increase.

I don't necessarily disagree but I get the feeling no one read the article LOL

Don't need to read an article to know why scoring is up.

It's no different than the NFL.

Casual fans like scoring, so you make rule changes that de-emphasize defense making it easier to score.

Scoring goes up.

Casual fans want 38-35 NFL games and 125-121 NBA games and those are the fans who will spend their money someplace else if they aren't getting them.

LOL yeah no actual reporters with statistics can tell you anything

By the way scoring was way down in the NFL this year but keep being proud of not learning stuff.

Yes, it’s not more free throws, but that is the only stat they give for defense. Of course guys still don’t want to foul out, so they play within the rules that are steeply tilted in the offensive’s favor.
Yes, todays players are very talented offensively, especially in shooting 3s, but they are playing against defenses that have been handcuffed.
