It seems like you could go back and look at the recruiting class rankings from 2014-2016 and probably have a pretty good chance at figuring out at least half the playoff teams. I had recently read that best predictor for who will be a playoff team resides largely on where those teams sophomore, junior, and senior classes ranked nationally. If those combined rankings from those years has them as one of the top 5-10 classes, then there is a GREAT chance they will be a playoff team.
