Clearly they need to do something like that.

Hopefully the pen can overachieve again and the unhealthy guys last year don't miss a beat (Smith and Thornburg).

fuck Cy youngs

Yeah, he needs to just understand that he doesn't have what it takes to win a CY. He should focus on getting his team to the playoffs and performing well there instead of grasping for things that will always be just out of reach.

59-22 before The AS break.

32-36 with a half run higher ERA in the second half for his career.

Some guys just don't have the heart. Sale is one of those guys.

Sale is intensely competitive. To the point where it goes a bit overboard... The White Sox were once scheduled to wear throwbacks. He had a string of wins in the greys and didn't want to change out of that. He walked into the clubhouse that day, saw the throwbacks laid out... immediately grabbed a scissors and began cutting them up so they couldn't wear them.

The guy's will to win has never been in question. He's f'n insane.

Ventura would run Sale into the ground in Chicago. Last year, Sale would go back out to the mound for the 7th or 8th already with 100+ pitches under his belt.

It may not be the entire problem. However, the pitch count DESPERATELY needs to be monitored. Managers have repeated this same approach to Sale for his entire career, and he always gets run into the ground.

His will to win made him throw a hissy fit and destroy unis?

That's funny.

He was a closer because he can't handle a workload.

Meh. He's averaged 107 pitches per start in each of the last three seasons. I don't think that's an outrageous ask of an ace.

Like Smitty say, he's just a heartless puss, and I'd add that the whole bit about cutting up the jerseys shows that he's a heartless puss that acts like a spoiled, prepubescent girl.

Yes. The guy is obsessed with winning, on a borderline psychotic level. Personally, I am fine with that.

Let's say that is correct...

How does that = He has no heart

You can visibly see how hard the guy is working out there. He's as firey and fiercely competitive as any player in the game.

Stop trotting him back out to the mound with 106 pitches under his belt April through July... and you'll likely see him fair better later on in the season. It's common sense. The approach to Chris Sale throughout his career has been ancient.

You are also presenting your argument in a rather dishonest fashion by citing only his W/L record.

Career 2nd Half: 3.28 ERA, 10.91 K/9 1.11 HR/9 2.11 BB/9 and 1.14 WHIP

Career 1st Half: 2.74 ERA, 10.25 K/9, 0.78 HR/9 1.92 BB/9 and 0.97 WHIP

He's not dropping off of a cliff. In the least... He's still posting ace caliber numbers. He doesn't perform poorly... or even average. He's still very, very good in the 2nd half of the season.

All of his numbers are significantly worse in the second half. He strikes out more guys, an outs an out.

Pretty obvious he doesn't have the intestinal fortitude to succeed under pressure, down the stretch. If he really was obsessed with winning, he wouldn't act out and earn suspensions from the team, causing lesser pitching to be used in his place.

Although it was in the second half when that happened(I was in Boston at the time, watching a real pitcher with heart shut down Sales current employer) so they prolly lose anyway.

I didn't just site W/L.

His ERA was mentioned. Half run difference is significant, to me.

No. They're not. They're slightly worse... and still really good.

For instance:

Verlander 2nd half splits

3.30 ERA (Sale 3.28)
8.7 K/9 (Sale 10.91)
2.48 BB/9 (Sale 2.23)
1.16 WHIP (Sale 1.14)
.233 Opp BA (Sale .236)

No heart...?

My favorite part of this Sale vs Verlander debate is that they’re both the Indians’ bitches.

Chris Sale career ERA: 2.98
Chris Sale career ERA vs CLE: 4.78

Justin Verlander career ERA: 3.46
Justin Verlander career ERA vs CLE: 4.71

Wampum on the barrel head, straight up, fucking owned.
