Took me a while to appreciate a good whiskey neat. Of course it took me a while to realize what a good whiskey was. As long as I stay away from trash, I usually only wind up with a case of the whiskey shits after a night of excess. Vodka on the other hand is a very different story.

I could probably choke it down if I had never seen it made...Fish soaked in lye...who comes up with this shit. Who was the first one...did somebody drop some fish in when the wife was making soap and decide they were hungry enough to eat it?

It is a Scandanavian thing. They had to preserve their fish for winter because the water would freeze up.

It became a taste they craved still when they can to America in the winters so the tradition continued.

We still do it every once in a while. Not like when my grandparents were alive when it was every year though.
