It's not totally surprising IMO. Cook has had a lot of injuries.

i am surprised... Cook is still very good...
...
i am getting very nervous for all RBs in this league... they are being seen more and more as replaceable pieces... and they are not being paid as well as they were a decade ago...

but it is them that take the biggest physical risks, and they are the ones that are responsible for a significant portion of a teams offense...

Posted this in the FA thread but will put here as well:

Such a mistake.

The type of cash and cap savings they are seeing from releasing him isn't worth the major drop in production in both rushing and passing game that we will see with him not there.

It's my biggest beef with the RB's don't matter GM's. They just dont realize how much harder it is to pass the football when the defense literally doesnt worry about stopping the run.

Only way this makes any sense is if they make him a post June 1st cut and use the cap space to bring in someone else of value elsewhere (signing a FA DL or CB or something to that effect) and they get one of the young guys to really step up.

For all the fantasy players out there, make grabbing Ty Chandler later in the draft a possibility. No way 3.8 ypc Mattison holds down the starting job for very long.

June 1st cuts arent based on the date anymore. It's a designation not a date. They dont have to spread the cap hit into next year if they choose not to.

Not a 2nd contract kind of guy.

Lean into the passing game, make it easier for their shitty defense.

more words of wisdom?
hey...you impress yourself anyways
They won more games with Kirk throwing more and they added a young weapon in the draft. He replaces Cook as a resource allotted to the offense. They can use Cook's money to improve the defense. He's not a 2nd contract guy.

Whoever signs him is going to get a good RB. He has spent his whole career running behind a complete shit offensive line.

I dont want to act like there are signs of him starting to decline aren't there. He doesnt have quite the burst he used to. But he still has a lot of football in him IMO.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports the Vikings are expected to release Dalvin Cook.

Cook's release is expected to be made official on Friday. The Vikings save nearly $9 million in cap space with the release of Cook (27), who is expected to have a strong free agent market. The Dolphins and Broncos have been closely linked to Cook over the last several months, which include rumors of the Dolphins trying to trade for Cook ahead of the NFL Draft. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the team could attempt to trade Cook once more before Friday, but it sounds like the veteran back is officially on his way out of Minnesota after six seasons. Injuries have plagued Cook throughout much of his career, but that hasn't stopped him from ripping off four-straight 1,000-yard seasons and 43 rushing touchdowns over that span. He should have several suitors on the open market, including the Dolphins and Broncos.

I wasn't counting the rookie deal. You give him the rookie deal and sign him at the end of it but you don't give him two big contracts.

He's already been a character risk and you essentially got away with it. If he had any extra trade value they would have moved him.

With them shopping Hunter as well, this move kinda surprised me a bit... Time to do a bit of retooling I guess w/ GB most likely taking a step back, Bears are what they are and the Lions being a bit better than they were last year... Division is up for grabs...

lol...no points for you.

smart guy would...nevermind, that ain't you
It would be dumb to draft a rb early, have success, and not give him a deal. But you get into risky territory giving him a second one.

Eagles didn't do it with Sanders.
