Player B - John Valentin.

Shit, I almost forgot about him. That's a pretty impressive line for anyone, let alone a shortstop.

Correct. A lot of people think of him as "the SS before Nomar", but Valentin was a damn good player for a while. I think his '95 season might have been better than any of Nomar's best years, a lot of it having to do with defense (Nomar was OK, Valentin was great). Keep in mind Valentin didn't even make the ASG (or any year, for that matter) in '95, and it's not like Ripken's numbers were better at the ASB.

Numbers by the ASB:
Valentin: .284/.384/.529, 132 wRC+, 3.8 WAR
Ripken: .284/.337/.443, 97 wRC+, 2.2 WAR (2nd among shortstops)

Ripken was having a good year, but Valentin was having an MVP caliber year. Though, there were a few others with very good cases that year (Belle, Edgar Martinez, Randy Johnson, etc.). Vaughn had no business winning that year.

some hints:

One was a catcher. The other won MVP that year.

Is D Mark Eichorn?

Yes! He had some other good years, but his '86 was probably one of the greatest relief seasons of all-time. Mariano Rivera's 1996 and John Hiller's 1973 seasons also come to mind.

A is the catcher, it's Hammerin' Hoiles. I had him in fantasy that year (fantasy baseball that is)

He should have been Rookie of the Year

Correct again! Hoiles was a very solid hitting catcher, drew walks and hit some home runs. He batted .274/.384/.506 in '92 too, albeit in 371 PA. And after '93, he looked like he was on his way to being a star. Unfortunately, he never really could replicate his '93 success, and batted .255/.367/.456 from 94-98.

Absolutely... voters creamed themselves over Canseco's HR/RBI numbers (33/117). He had a nice 21-year-old season, but even then, his numbers were still kinda pedestrian for a corner OF.
