Just as a follow-up to jstew's post above, I think we gloss over just how racist Trump's tweets are because his tweets are targeting Mexicans and people from Central America. If you substitute in for example Germans or Japanese, I think there would be significantly more condemnation of this behavior.

Stock market down over 300 points again today (and getting further into negative territory for 2018). The only saving grace for Trump is that the economy has been doing pretty well, once people's 401K values start dropping and people start losing jobs again, the chickens are going to come home to roost.

do Trump cultists have 401K's though ???

Maybe a reality (polling) check is in order - Canada and the USA are welcoming countries despite recent events:

The polling company Ipsos surveyed 20,000 people across 27 countries, looking at questions of religion, immigration status, the origin country of someone’s parents, as well as sexuality, criminal background and extreme political views. It found that Canadians had the broadest acceptance of who was a “real Canadian”, and that the US was close behind in second place. It suggests most Americans are at odds with the nativist position of the current administration.

The other scourge the US has is the wingnuts. There are 10% wingnuts on either side of the political spectrum, and the 80% in the middle generally just want to live happily and wish both sets of wingnuts would just shut up. Unfortunately both major parties feel like they have to cater to the wingnuts so that's what you hear. The extreme things like the trade war failure (so far), the dropping out of climate accords, and this immigration mess are only popular with the loud wingnuts.

Plus, the more shit gets stirred up, the more people click news articles. So the media also likes to stoke the nutballs. Sweet, sweet ad revenue.

When the school bus crashes into the orphanage, the news never talks to the guy who expresses concern over the injured and says we shouldn't rush to judgement over the cause. They find the guy with one tooth who yells I SEENED DA WHOLE THING

^^Also will add: Did Salmonella at Trump’s Restaurant Kill Her Dad?

But newspaper reports indicate that Trump’s food-related woes only continued in Atlantic City. In 1992, the AP reported that “Donald Trump’s properties have the worst track record for food-related health problems among Atlantic City’s 12 casinos,” citing statements made by city health officials. Between 1984 and that time, the AP noted, there were five salmonella outbreaks at Trump properties, resulting in several temporary closures.

“We find it highly unusual that most of our problems in Atlantic City have been associated with the Trump properties,” then-Atlantic City health department official Denise Nelson told the AP. “The physical part of the [establishments] is top-of-the-line but it all boils down to extremely poor food handling.”

Yeah, but are those Americans who feel that way "real Americans," dash? As we all know, "real Americans" are straight, white middle class people in the rust belt. Anyone else is just some "coastal elite" or whatever.

It's the pandering to the extremes (and to the single-issue voters, who, of course, are politicians' dreams come true), which puts our legislative decisions at odds with the will of the people who are supposed to be represented. And it stifles real and positive progress.
