The Washington Redskins open training camp on July 27 at the Bon Secours Washington Redskins Training Center in Richmond, Virginia. Here’s a closer look at the Redskins’ camp:

Top storyline: It's quarterback Kirk Cousins and whether this will be his last season in Washington. The Redskins failed to reach a long-term deal with Cousins by the July 17 deadline, so now there’s a chance he will be a free agent in the 2018 offseason. He can aid himself by helping the Redskins maintain a strong passing attack despite the loss of receivers Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson. Make no mistake: Washington has firepower, but it also has two receivers with no experience (Terrelle Pryor) or very little (Josh Doctson) playing with Cousins. No excuses, though. If Cousins wants the (really, really) big bucks, he must deliver.

QB depth chart: The Redskins have a solid starter in Cousins and a smart backup in Colt McCoy. Cousins has started the past two seasons, setting franchise records in passing yards each season. McCoy has big fans in the organization. It's arm strength that separates the two quarterbacks. Second-year QB Nate Sudfeld, a 2016 sixth-round pick, struggled in training camp last summer. He must show this summer whether he is on track to develop into a future starter or just a backup.

Bubble watch: Receiver Brian Quick. The former Ram, coming off his best season (41 catches, 564 yards), didn’t look great in the spring, and it’s hard to imagine him cracking the Redskins’ top four. If he’s a back-end roster guy, special teams will come into play. Regardless, he’ll need a strong camp to earn a roster spot.

That rookie could start: The obvious one is first-round pick Jonathan Allen at defensive end, considering many would have picked him in the top five, had there been no concerns about his back. Allen worked with the second and third units in the spring, but his talent suggests that he will be an early starter. Fourth-round running back Samaje Perine is another to watch.

Vet to watch: Linebacker Junior Galette. He missed the past two seasons with Achilles injuries, so despite being with Washington since the summer of 2015, he has yet to appear in a game. He shed 15 pounds in hopes it will help him maintain his explosion off the line despite the injuries. If he regains his form, Galette, who posted a combined 22 sacks in 2013 and '14 with New Orleans, could have a solid impact on the pass rush.

Key battle: Inside linebacker. The Redskins signed Zach Brown in the offseason, making him their highest paid inside linebacker. If he starts, he could be one of a possible seven new starters on defense. In the spring, Brown worked mostly with the second defense, though he and Mason Foster split time with the starters in minicamp. Brown’s speed and athleticism will get him on the field; he can help in their nickel package if nothing else. But who starts out of these three: Brown, Foster and Will Compton? Also, third-year Martrell Spaight will sneak into this race if he stays healthy. Coaches like him.

I think there are things to be excited about this year. How does the O work with new receivers and a new play caller? What does Samaje Perine add to the team. How much improvement does the team get from a new DC, free agents and a lot of draft picks?

Time for Redskins WR Ryan Grant to carry summer success into fall
5:39 PM ET
  • i

    John KeimESPN Staff Writer
ASHBURN, Va. -- Ryan Grant turned cornerbacks around and then started turning heads. In his first training camp three years ago, Grant stood out as a mature rookie because of his route running. In the ensuing three seasons, though, the wide receiver has been known more for his route running in practices than success in games.

It's time for him to do more. As the Washington Redskins prepare to begin training camp Thursday, Grant will have more opportunities to prove his coaches right. They haven't lost confidence in him after 39 catches in three seasons for a big reason: They like how he works, how he runs routes and know he was playing behind DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon.

Ryan Grant, an impressive route runner who has shined in practices, can play every receiver position in Washington's scheme. AP Photo/Michael Ainsworth
Those two are gone, prompting the need for Grant to be a more consistent producer. In the spring, Grant worked as the No. 3 receiver with Terrelle Pryor and Jamison Crowder. Grant can play all three receiver spots, which is why he worked ahead of 2016 first-round pick Josh Doctson in the spring.

"I'm easily Ryan Grant's biggest fan," Redskins receivers coach Ike Hilliard said. "He's always been our best pure route runner out of everyone, even with Pierre and DJax here. He's been a consummate pro. He says nothing and he works all the time. He's gotten a bad rap for situations that weren't completely his fault. The world will never know that."

Grant was the intended target on an overtime pass against Atlanta in 2015. But he slipped, the defensive back stepped in front and returned the interception for a touchdown. Quarterback Kirk Cousins admitted later he shouldn't have made the pass.

There have been other mishaps, too. Regardless, the coaches' belief hasn't wavered. Two years ago, while starting five games in place of an injured Jackson, Grant caught 23 passes; he finished with nine last season.

In the past two seasons, Cousins has posted a 75.2 passer rating when targeting Grant. Cousins has completed just 59.6 percent of his passes to Grant in that span.

"He needs opportunities," Redskins coach Jay Gruden said of Grant in June. "You can't produce very well at wideout if you don't get opportunities. ... Hopefully he'll get more opportunities. He's our most consistent guy, without a doubt, as a far as being able to line up everywhere, run the routes exactly how we want them at the right depth coming out of them. He's physical across the middle, he's fast enough to go deep, so I'm anxious for him to get some opportunities and see what he can do."

Jackson and Garcon were proven veterans. Now the Redskins have one receiver entering his second full season at the position -- Pryor -- but he's also one coming off a 1,000-yard season. Doctson played two games last season and rarely practiced in the spring or summer because of Achilles issues. There's room for Grant to get more consistent time.

"He put on weight, got stronger, did all the things everyone asked him to do," Hilliard said. "Hopefully now it's his time to go out and show he can play."

The big 2 are gone so it's Grants time to sink or swim. Would be huge for KC if he can step up and become a reliable guy in the 2 deep.

i think grant does everything well except it seems like he loses his footing when we need a play . grant has 39 career catches and when a guy like harris comes in he moves the chains . grant needs to do that . maybe he can

Grant seems like a practice player to me. Looks good without pads. Maybe he needs a two hand touch league.
