This is bad. 24 year old solid corner. Why would you approve his trade request?

Two options I see:

1. They aren't going to pay him and want whatever compensation he brings. (This is a f*cking dumb option...but obviously possible)

or

2. They don't think he can get the money he wants anywhere else, so they're calling his bluff.

You know, we CAN franchise tag him this offseason if all else fails. *shrugs*

I guess we'll find out more by deadline today.

Looks like he's a free agent after this year. Man, horrible. He has one of the best coverage stats among all corners. These kind of guys are not easy to find.

The importance of tanking intensifies. Not tanking is not working.

Bears acquired Montez Sweat from Commanders for a 2nd round pick.

Wait...I thought we wanted Young?!?

Why take the guy who is 27 years old over the 24 year old? Is Sweat that much better? Or maybe Washington just didn't want to trade Young?!?

The odds of finding another Jaylon Johnson in the draft is slim.

The odds of finding a Montez Sweat are much higher.

This is stupid.

To add to the stupidity Montez Sweat will be a free agent after this year. I just don't understand.

Sweat for a 2nd
Claypool for a 2nd

Like the idiots on this board Poles do not understand the value of draft picks.

I mean...We need a pass rusher desperately...but why do we keep overpaying for players? STOP OVERPAYING POLES.

We have an extension in the works with Sweat for sure or Poles is the dumbest GM in history.

We just traded for a pass rusher that was gonna be a free agent. And the upcoming draft has pass rushers.

This overpay move screams arrogance from our management. They must truly believe we're on the right path. We're gonna have another opener next season where it's obvious we stink again and we're gonna get the dumbfounded looks all around...Goddamn Groundhog's day. Hopefully not against the Packers again...

Two part grade here:

If the Bears extend Sweat at a realistic price and timeframe: B+, possibly A-
If Sweat walks after this half season: F--

Thats just it,they HAVE TO HAVE all the intent of signing him,if they let him walk, that F--- grade you gave, the f stands for firing offense......
And if he got fired because of that, not sure Poles could ever get another job like that.....that will be kn his resume forever....
Altho I believe this will not be another Claypool like trade,he should be decent for us and I like the trade, but a 2nd seems to be too much.......again.

I just realized what losing our 2nd rounder means...We're probably not going to draft a decent center....Now I'm actually upset. Doug Kramer is going to have to be Braxton Jones 2.

Age doesn't factor in here as much as health and consistency does. In his 5 years of play to date Sweat has only missed a batch of games once, back in '21, and he was pretty much on pace for that year to match his production from other seasons. If he signs an extension, and we all know IF is the 800 lb gorilla in the room word, but if he does sign an extension, it will likely be 4-5 years with perhaps the first three guaranteed. In those years he should still be playing in top form.

Now OTOH, if he doesn't sign an extension, we're looking at Chase Claypool 2.0

There's just no way this dude doesn't have an extension worked out with the Bears already. They're probably just not announcing it yet because the media would have a field day with it a la "Bears give big money to acquisition while screwing over homegrown product that earned it (Johnson)."
