I don't understand the Darnold hype, I really don't. The ceiling is there but the floor is there too.
What do you mean? A guy surrounded by 4 and 5 star talent who still managed to turn the ball over eleventy billion times in less than 2 years doesn't do it for you?? Weird

There isn't a guy on this year's draft that would be in my top 3. Maybe not even my top 5. Mahomes has better arm strength and accuracy than all these guys ( save maybe Allen on only arm strength ) and is far more mobile. Yet he's not even top 10.

My top 3 ( based on what I thought of them coming in) would be

Watson
Wentz
Goff

After that is go Mahomes, Trubisky then id probably get to my first guy this year which would be Mayfield. Not sure Darnold makes my top 10.

Eh, better than drafting a QB who could get his next concussion by someone breathing on him. You want that?

If Watson can stay healthy, I have zero doubt he'll be the best of the bunch.

They might prove me wrong, but I'll betting that whatever teams get Darnold and Rosen will be regretting it.

I like Mayfield and Jackson's chances the best of being future NFL stars of QBs in this class.

Yeah I remember Brees' shoulder injury. I also remember it happened after he'd been in the league for several seasons. Which was the question I asked, and you refused to answer.
I answered it in a way you didn't like; framing it as a performance versus injury risk calculus

But for giggles

Did Brees have multiple concussions coming into the league?
As far as we know, no.

Then when he gets concussed again and again, remember what I said.
Far more willing to take a chance on a player that I think is/will be good versus a guy who needs a ton of work and at least 1 year glued to the bench to even think about being good. At QB you take chances. If Peyton Manning came out now I guarantee you we would be hyper-analyzing his neck with what we knew about Cooper. You take the risk and figure it out later.

Definitely bothers me, but the OL USC had was dogshit. To be fair, so are a lot of OL's;though Rosen had a better go of it than Darnold, Allen, and Jackson did, imo. The turnovers and performance against P-5 competition bothers me a ton with Darnold. His bowl game against Ohio State just adds to my concerns about Darnold being ready year 1.

Three words: Ewe, Es, See. Darnold will be as good as Leinart, Sanchez, Barkley, et al.
Darnold is a completely different type of QB than all three. Leinart and Barkley were pure pocket passers. Also had a lot more weapons to work with. Bush,White,Smith,Lee,Jarrett....Sanchez was a little more mobile than Barkley and Leinart. But none of them are comparable to Darnold. Do you watch college football? :L

I'm from Sacramento, so no.
Kinda figured that. Darnold isn't the prototypical SC QB some may be used too. SC produced a lot of system QB's in the past. Outside of Palmer the majority were busts.Sanchez was meh. Darnold is a different breed of QB from the SC norm. More athletic, much more arm strength than the rest outside maybe Palmer, very creative makes plays out of nothing and is clutch when it counts. Didn't have the same talent around him the others had. Can't really compare him to the other SC QB's. Ive got Darnold/Mayfield at 1 and 2.

What people got wrong about Watson: people thought he was wildly inconsistent with decision making and ball velocity. Although I guess they were right about his decision making in a way.

What people got wrong about Allen: he was actually compared to Mahomes coming out and both had the issue of being guys who played outside of the system and had accuracy issues which is normally QB death at the NFL level. Mahomes has been surrounded by talent and hasn't really improved his game. He just has fun out there like he is the NFL Magic Johnson. Josh Allen had to suffer a couple of years on some bad offenses and then was gifted one of the best WRs in the NFL and has improved his deep ball a ton. I think both QBs take too many hits and so neither will have Brady like longevity. Closer to Rodgers and Big Ben.

Mayfield is less consistent than people thought he would be.

Lamar Jackson is exactly what everyone thought he was. Its just that no one wanted him for whatever reason.

Sam Darnold, Wentz, and Goff were all projections. Of the three I thought Wentz had the highest upside although the NFL was highest on Darnold's upside.

Top 10 QB prospects of past 3 NFL draft classes: Darnold No. 1

I always believe it's helpful during the evaluation process to rank the current group of prospects among the players at the position from the previous two drafts. I recently looked up the grades I gave to the quarterbacks in the '16 and '17 draft classes and I slotted them in with this year's crop of talent. Here's the order I have them in based on their draft grade.

1) Sam Darnold, USC
Draft class:
2018
The skinny: I had very similar draft grades on each of the top four players on this list. However, I gave Darnold a slightly higher grade than Carson Wentz because of his durability and level of competition from college.

2) Carson Wentz, North Dakota State
Draft class:
2016; second overall pick, Philadelphia Eagles
The skinny: Wentz had an ideal skill set coming out of NDSU. His ability to drive the ball accurately and create with his legs made him a special prospect.

3) Josh Rosen, UCLA
Draft class:
2018
The skinny: Rosen is the best pure passer in this time frame (2016-2018). His motion, footwork and arm talent are off the charts.

4) Jared Goff, Cal
Draft class:
2016; first overall pick, Los Angeles Rams
The skinny: Goff was very smooth and accurate at Cal. He was an effortless thrower and you've seen that carry over to the NFL.

5) Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma
Draft class:
2018
The skinny: Mayfield is the shortest member of this group (measured in at 6-foot 5/8 and 215 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine), but I gave him a strong grade based on his touch, playmaking ability and toughness.

6) Josh Allen, Wyoming
Draft class:
2018
The skinny: Allen was an inconsistent performer at Wyoming, but his good moments are incredibly impressive. He is very capable of outplaying my draft grade.

7) Deshaun Watson, Clemson
Draft class:
2017; 12th overall pick, Houston Texans
The skinny: I had Watson as my highest-rated quarterback in last year's class, but based on early returns, I was way too low with my grade. I had concerns with his accuracy and decision making, but he cleaned up both areas last fall. He was off to a remarkable start as a rookie before suffering an ACL tear in November.

8) Mitchell Trubisky, North Carolina
Draft class:
2017; second overall pick, Chicago Bears
The skinny: I loved Trubisky's talent, but he had a very small sample size of production. He was a full-time starter for only one year at UNC, but his upside was tremendous.

9) DeShone Kizer, Notre Dame
Draft class:
2017; 52nd overall pick (Round 2), Cleveland Browns
The skinny: I had a big grade on Kizer heading into his final year at Notre Dame, but he struggled mightily to maintain that level of play. I ended up dropping his grade prior to the 2017 draft and he landed in a really tough spot in Cleveland. He was rushed into action before he was ready to play, and the results weren't pretty. Now, he's getting a fresh start after being traded to the Green Bay Packers earlier this month.

10) Paxton Lynch, Memphis
Draft class:
2016; 26th overall pick, Denver Broncos
The skinny: Lynch was a polarizing player coming out of Memphis. His size, arm talent and athleticism were enticing, but I had concerns about the adjustment he would have to make from his college offense to an NFL system.
well one out of ten aint bad.
You didnt get shut out.

Solid take here. Even though Baker has struggled and Watson a mess off the field

Josh Allen is an absolute freakish athletic beast. But at some point, the Bills need to limit his designed runs.
