It appears Pena just had a bad body hop on his miserable beached whale 1b slide on his bunt. No damage to the shoulder, at least according to the Ray Charles Diagnostic Wing of Reds Med staff. He's about 240 lbs, so we'll see how sore he is today...I don't know which shoulder it is, but hopefully, he can get behind the plate soon to give Meso a breather. It sucks for a catcher trying to be a middle of the order hitter to be bruised up in April.

Price is showing me that he's trying very hard to get the players to like him. Some of his moves (or non-moves) suggest he's something less than a genius. "Hunch" baseball was supposed to be going out the back door in favor of the more advanced metrics. At least that was what we were going to see, according to Price before 2014.
I cut the guy slack last year. Either Brandon Phillips learns to bunt in the 7 hole or he goes to the fuckin' bench.

You'd like the new hot dog concession marquees at GABP John. They're calling them Porkopolis and they have a "Flying Pig" wearing a Reds cap. Sorry.... no flying elephants, but that might have been what Pena was thinking of when he took flight. Got to love the guys hustle and attitude, but he might want to stop with the aerobatics.

Iglesias and Chris Dominguez have been optioned out. Mesoraco stayed in Cincinnati for a hip MRI and the Reds have purchased the contract of Kyle Skipworth and reliever Josh Smith. Two 40 man roster moves are pending. Makes you wonder what adding Skipworth means to Tucker Barnhart's future? With Mesoraco in Cincinnati and Dominguez optioned it leaves the Reds a bat short tonight.

I think Pena was holding his left arm when he got on his feet Sunday and walked to the dugout. He's in the starting lineup, so I guess it wasn't as bad as it originally looked. With his initial reaction it appeared he might have dislocated his shoulder.

Mesoraco reached base Saturday on a infield hit and ended up stealing second base. He had a very awkward looking slide which makes me wonder if he didn't initially hurt his hip on that play. I left the Sunday game in the 7th inning and didn't see him play after Pena exited, did something happen after he entered the game that looked to cause the hip issue?

Now they're reporting out of Louisville that Ryan Dennick has been DFA and there's one more coming.

Kris Negron is starting for BH who is nursing a finger he hurt stealing 2nd base. Gives Lester one less player to worry about throwing to a base on.

The second DFA turns out be Corcino which is a bit surprising. Corcino may not clear waivers and might be gone.

The Barnhart deal is rule related, a player on optional assignment can't be called up until after 10 days on assignment have passed which is Wednesday unless the player being replaced is put on the DL. So the only players that can be called up today are players that were not on the 40 man 10 days ago since the Reds haven't placed anyone on the DL.

This rule has created a mess for the Reds. It's meant to keep teams from moving players up and down for matchup purposes, but screws a team that has day to day injuries the first ten days of the season.

I did not see where Mesoraco got hurt, if he did. The addition of Skipworth isn't a big surprise. I think he has a smattering of big-league experience and he got plenty of chances to run the pitchers during the spring. I know he was once a top draft choice. He may be a better short-term bat than Barnhart. It's apples to grapes to me.

Having Negron in there in place of Hamilton is classic.

Saying the Reds are a bat short with Dominguez gone is kind of funny.

Not surprised that Iglesias was sent down. Homer will take his spot on Saturday.

I looked at Skipworth's minor league service time and he appears to have 1 option year left, so he can be optioned and remain on the 40 man. Not a bad thing to have 4 catchers on the 40 man roster, the Reds have two banged up currently. Josh Smith would have all his option years available. He was a 2010 draft pick that has never figured into Reds' future big league plans. But as we saw today, never say never......shit happens. I'd guess his time on the 40 man may not be long term and Skipworth might be in the same boat after the All Star break. It'd be in their best future career interest to take advantage of what ever small sample size this break might give them.

The Reds are going to be in need of a backup catcher next year. Skipworth and Barnhart would be the two options currently available on the depth chart. I've never seen Skipworth play.

Good start to the game against Lester. Negron smoked a line out to Castro, Votto tripled on a pulled ball into the RF corner, Frazier RBI double and Phillips gets a hit and now it's Byrd.....weak ground ball RBI scoring Fraz from 3rd. Bruce singles home Phillips and steals 2nd base. Pena with a injured shoulder hits a sharp groundout to end the inning. Pitcher struggling and Byrd still can't square the ball up. What's the odds that guy gets the 500+ ABs to vest in the 2016 $8M option?...... not looking good.
