The 23-year-old Witt, who is entering his third major league season, was one of the best players in baseball last year, prompting the Royals to lavish on him a deal that includes superstar money with flexibility as well. The contract will allow Witt to opt out after the seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th years, sources said. It also includes a club option after the 11th season that would tack on three years and $89 million to the contract, giving it a 14-year, $377 million ceiling.

Would love to see him walk more, but it's not like there's any real contact concerns. 19.3% K% in his first two seasons and it was 17.4% last year. 78.9% contact rate in 2023 and a 10.5% SwStr%. FWIW, he underperformed his StatCast metrics significantly (.297 xBA, .535 xSLG, .373 xwOBA; he had a .276 BA, .495 SLG%, and .343 wOBA). Most important thing is his defense graded significantly better than in 2022. There's some disagreement on how good his defense was, but at the very least it seems like the Royals shouldn't have to stress too much about having to move him off short (unless they have a stud defensive SS)

Hard not to be happy for Royals fans. He's a fun player, enjoy watching him for the next 11 years... I will

It's definitely the open question I have for him... If he walked just a little more without giving up his other considerable skills, he could threaten an MVP-like season, imo. A little more patience would generate much better counts, and walks. Obvious yes, but it's low hanging fruit, and fruit is tasty.
