Mark Podolski: Look out, SEC West; Big Ten East ready to be No. 1 division in college football

For about decade, no one dared to question the hallowed ground of the SEC West as college football’s premier division.

It’s time to question it. Those wearing the boxing gloves and applying the body shots come from the most unlikely contender: The Big Ten.

Believe it. The Big Ten’s East Division has a legitimate shot to be the best division in college football, thanks in part to Coach Urban Meyer and Ohio State slaying the SEC’s top dog, Alabama, in a College Football Playoff semifinal on New Year’s Day.

It’s strange how one game and one big victory can change mindsets and opinions. But that’s the reality now. Until defeating the Crimson Tide, the Buckeyes (save for a win over Arkansas in the 2011 Sugar Bowl, a win that was later vacated because of NCAA violations) had never beaten an SEC team in a postseason game.

In a span of three hours on Jan. 1, the Big Ten went from many saying it did not belong in the CFP field, and Ohio State being a big underdog to Alabama, to erasing years of frustration, and paving the way to an unlikely national championship by the Buckeyes.

Expect Ohio State to be the big favorite and preseason No. 1 when the polls are released. That’s not a secret.

However, the Buckeyes can’t do it alone in the Big Ten East. Michigan State finished last season 11-2, and with a win over Baylor in the Cotton Bowl, and is expected to be a top 10 team again in 2015.

The wild-card teams are Michigan (5-7 in 2015, but expected to be improved this season) and Penn State. If Coaches Jim Harbaugh and James Franklin, respectively, can take the next step in turning each program around, the Big Ten East can have something really special this season.

Another big factor is the state of Big Ten quarterbacks. Cardale Jones of Ohio State, Connor Cook of Michigan State and Penn State’s Christian Hackenburg are projected first-round picks for the 2016 NFL draft. The talent is there for all three at football’s most important position. Big edge to the Big Ten East.

Even Rutgers and Maryland won eight and seven games, respectively, in 2014 for the Big Ten East. The lone dog of the bunch is Indiana, 4-8 in 2014.

In the SEC West, don’t expect a huge dropoff, but domination, either, from the division’s elite such as Alabama, Auburn and LSU. The Crimson Tide must break in a new starter at quarterback, but Coach Nick Saban has had success with that before, most notably A.J. McCarron. At Auburn, many are predicting it to win the division, but the Tigers will break in a new starter at QB in Jeremy Johnson. LSU could surprise after an 8-5 mark last season. Expect big things from running back Leonard Fournette.

The biggest star at QB returning in the SEC West is Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott, but the Bulldogs must replace a lot of starters on both sides, most notably on the offensive line.

The bottom line is the SEC is in a transition period. After the conference won seven straight BCS national championships — that last in 2012 — it’s been two years since it took home a national crown. Also, the SEC West was 2-4 in last year’s postseason. For those keeping score, the Big Ten East was 5-1 in the postseason. And SEC commissioner Mike Slive, who was instrumental in building the brand of the SEC with its own TV network, is retiring this summer.

It’s a fair argument the Big Ten, most notably the East Division, is trending up, and the SEC West is in a holding pattern. Now is the time for the Big Ten East to lay claim as college football’s top division. The timing couldn’t be any better to dethrone — mythically speaking — the SEC West.

Why Michigan State Football will win the Big Ten in 2015

Chances are, the destiny of both the Spartans and Buckeyes will come down to this game. The winner will likely win the Big Ten, and earn a spot in the 2015 NCAA Playoffs. Ohio State, last years NCAA Champion, has the core of their 2014 team returning, including three Heisman-caliber quarterbacks (Cardale Jones, J.T. Barrett, Braxton Miller).

Prediction: Michigan State was unable to stop J.T. Barrett last year, and this Buckeyes team has gotten better after a top-10 2015 recruiting class. But, Ohio State could not slow Langford in 2014, and the Spartan’s offense will be faster, and more efficient behind an improved Connor Cook. Holmes runs all over the Buckeyes as MSU shocks Columbus. MSU – 41, OSU – 38

Yeah... not the best interview

Funny he thought colin was ripping the B1G
Yeah, I was a little confused by what he said as well.

He asked him, "is the B10 a buy". It was a little unclear. But year, pretty strange interview so far.

Haha, wow. Just stopped the interview.
