unless u have a crazy defensive line is it the stupidest defense in ftball. it amazes me how many coordinators fall in love with it on 3rd in 9-15.

True, you would think pressure is better, but what happens when you miss a tackle... which happens all to often. I think coaches prefer to assume the other team will make the mistake.

It's a complete joke to me. It pretty much guarantees a score for the offense.

You guys handed us a loss in a bowl game not so long ago because Jim Tressel squats when he pees and loved that safe-play bullshit.

I understand the idea behind a 3 man rush...it is just faulty though.

You can't cover people forever.

It has its uses. You are up 2 scores, it is great. Whether or not the offense scores on the next drive might not be as important as the time it takes for them to score. There are also a lot of 1.5 threat QBs playing these days. The guy that can kill you with his feet and is barely passable as a thrower. YOu certainly are more likely to give up a 50 yard scramble on 3 and 10 vs AUburn, than a 50 yard pass. In general I agree with the OP, but there are times it can make sense.

You hate to see it, everyone does. But I wonder what the actual statistics are behind it. DCs are paid big bucks, I can't imagine they would still go with it if it is as horrible as people feel.

Tthere is nothing wrong with the 3 man rush on 3rd and long; especially 3rd, and 15. Sometimes its best just to drop 8 in coverage, and force the opponent to throw underneath or into coverage.

Yeah, that situation is perfect, but I've seen Ohio State defenses under Tressel that do that for an entire half and then they wonder why the other team makes a comeback.

Unless you can get no pressure at all on the QB, in which case you just wasted three guys when you might just as well have dropped 11 into coverage.

Except for there are 2 things that almost never happen
1. You generally cant cover WRs forever
2. You generally cant block DL forever.

Miami lost a NC game to PSU using the drop 8 theory

there usually ends up being a huge whole between the safeties and linebackers in the middle of the field 15-25 yds down field. im guessing because teams go zone in these situations most of the time.

My opinion is on third and long you rush at least 4 if not 5 and try to force the qb into a hot route...

I wouldn't rush 5 playing Auburn and Nick Marshall. Would you have blitzed Martinez of Nebraska?

Nothing makes me drink heavily quite like a 3 man rush with soft zone coverage and DBs set-up 10 yards off the line of scrimmage on a 3rd and 6.

crap I hate to do this, but what you are experiencing is confirmation bias. It's used because most of the time it's successful. But the times when it's not successful stick out to people, and you get confirmation bias as a result and people in general believe "safe" type defenses don't work.

There is a reason that guy getting paid millions uses it - he knows it gives him the best chance. Nothing is every 100%, they'd be using it if so. If there is a mistake with using it, it's generally going into it too early.

worked like a charm again at the end of the game tonight . bc couldn't get a first down for most of the game. 3 man rush comes in and 8 plays later. touchdown

it is the safe defense. 1 play likely wont beat u. in almost every sport the team with the lead plays not to lose instead of playing to win the game.

-prevent d in ftball
-running the shot clock down in basketball
-dumping the puck in hockey

they all allow teams to get back in the game when they really have no business being in it.
