NCAA to discuss modifying targeting rule

Committee members will potentially grant the instant-replay officials added judgmental flexibility on targeting fouls, and also give them the power to stop the game if they spot a targeting foul that the on-field crew missed.

So now replay officials will be able to call the foul from the box if this passes.

Better idea: Let replay officials call too many men downfield since that's actually a call they have trouble making.

Lets go ahead and put 11 officials on the field while we are at it. 1 for every pair of players.

This targeting penalty is ruining college football for me. The replay officials are not using any common sense in making the call. The Nebraska kid that was ejected for targeting in the bowl game is an example. The helmets touched, so by rule its targeting. When in reality it was a good clean play. A&M's WR was called for targeting when he threw a block and ejected. Yet, not 5 yards away, the A&M QB took a direct shot head to head and it wasn't called. Most fans don't have any better idea of what targeting is in college than a catch is in the NFL.

I think that the targeting rule should be refined so that there are two types of targeting calls, one where the officials determine that the defender is intentionally targeting and one where it occurs simply because the defender's momentum causes him to go high. Don't think a player should be ejected on the latter type of play.

Well at least they are discussing it. Hopefully they understand that it's been a complete failure and are working towards making it more clear cut.

Targeting should not be called when the defensive player is pushed into the offensive player.

I like that they acknowledge that a helmet to helmet hit is just as dangerous whether or not it is intentional. That being said, I do sort of agree with you that an unintentional helmet to helmet hit does not warrant an ejection.
