Just putting together some puzzle pieces here from MLBTrade Rumors:

1) Yankees Notes: Swisher, Granderson, Cabrera, Sheets: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

"There is “pretty much zero possibility” the Yankees will retain Swisher if they are serious about lowering payroll below $189MM by 2014, Sherman writes. Swisher has “done a hell of a job” in New York, GM Brian Cashman told Sherman."

2) San Francisco Giants Rumors: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

"Giants outfielder Nate Schierholtz is out-of-options and could draw interest at the deadline. Schierholtz is hitting .248/.314/.400 with three homers in 140 plate appearances."

So if the Yankees are serious about dumping payroll and Swisher, and the Giants are looking for a corner outfield bat (a switch-hitter no less), I suggest Sabes and Cashman have lunch sometime soon. I'll even buy - it's the least I can do as part of my 10% finders fee.

(Swisher makes $9.1 mill this year, $10.25 in 2013, and is a FA after that.)

So in my delusional dream world, if we can get both Rollins and Swisher for spare parts, prospects, cash, and used equipment, we could see:

Rollins - SS
Theriot - 2B
Melky - LF
Posey - C
Panda - 3B
Swisher - RF
Pagan - CF
Belt - 1B

Interesting...

Swishers home/away splits are pretty even, so no reason to think he is a beneficiary of the Yankee Stadium band-box.

However, that does not mean he is a huge hitter. Since joining the Spanks...

Year - BA/OPS
2009 - .249/.869
2010 - .288/.870
2011 - .260/.822
2012 - .265/.811

Not horrible, but trending in the wrong direction and not exactly game-changing.

What is his defense like?

Swish is 31, he's having a very nice year that is right around his career average (117 OPS+). His defense is not good and he's in his walk year. If we did get him for Nate plus prospect(s), he'd need to play LF and Lechero would move to RF. Huff would certainly be cut as a) he's LH and b) Swish can play 1B.

All that said, the Spanks don't really reduce payroll much by trading him, and they're in a playoff run. I think the author is correct that the Yanks won't REsign him, but they're not going to trade a productive hitter for a career journeyman while they're making a run.

Nothing to see here, move along.
