Defense
For the second consecutive week the defense was on the field for 68 snaps. Of the 27 defenders on the roster, 20 of them saw action against Dallas. Four of the seven that did not take a defensive snap were inactive (Anthony Lanier, Kendall Reyes, Martrell Spaight and Kendall Fuller); the other three only played on special teams (Quinton Dunbar, Deshazor Everett and Duke Ihenacho). Five defensive players played fewer than five snaps (Greg Toler, Will Blackmon, Terence Garvin, Houston Bates and Kedric Golston).
The defense blitzed 10 times, got pressure on 13 occasions, hit the quarterback 8 times and recorded 4 sacks. The run D improved this week by allowing just 102 rushing yards on 30 carries (3.4 YPC).
Joe Barry's group currently ranks 28th in points allowed per game (32.5), 29th in yards per drive allowed (40.8), 30th in expected points (-33.65), 30th in scoring percentage allowed (55%), 31st in time of possession allowed per drive (3:18), 32nd in third-down conversion percentage allowed (57.7%) and 32nd in points per drive allowed (3.25).

- Kirk Cousins Interceptions- The Redskins are now 3-30 when Kirk Cousins throws an interception. Cousins threw his third one of the season against the Cowboys. Last year, he closed the season by throwing only three picks in his final 11 games and just one in his final 7 games (postseason included in both figures). He has not been blitzed or pressured on any of his interceptions this year. Two of his three INTs this season have come in the red zone. Prior to 2016, Cousins had never thrown a pick in the red area on 115 career RZ passing attempts.
- Cousins Red Zone- Also, prior to this season, Kirk Cousins was 72-115 (62.6%) with 32 touchdowns and zero interceptions in the red zone (111.8 passer rating). In 2015, Kirk was 50-78 (64%) for 22 touchdowns and no interceptions (113.5 rating). In his final four regular season games of last year, he was 16-25 (64%) in that area with nine touchdowns and zero picks (135.6 rating). So far in 2016, Cousins has gone just 5-17 (29%) for 34 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions inside the 20-yard line (19.6 rating).
- More Cousins- Here are Cousins' rankings among NFL and NFC East quarterbacks in several key passing metrics: adjusted net yards per attempt (19th/4th), quarterback rating (27th/4th), QBR (24th/4th) and Pro Football Focus grade (29th/4th). There are a couple of areas where Cousins has found success this season, though. He has performed significantly better under center (QB rating of 74.1 vs. 94.8), with play action passes (72.5 to 113.6) and in the no-huddle offense (73.9 vs. 99.7). Two of those things would involve the team running more, which as you'll see later, would probably be beneficial; and the no huddle may help him find some rhythm and consistency.
