I agree he's 29 and hasn't had a good season looking at his stats at least.

He isn't a big pass rusher. But he is a good fit as the big end so in running situations you would have a line of Reed, Jones, Williams and Mafe as the pass rusher.

And his contract is up at the end of the year

Or do they extend him and bring his cap # down?
Oh sure extended a aging declining player and make a bad decision even worse.

Well a glimmer of good news then.

It actually makes this a situation where the team can see if he's just having a down year before they extend him.

Also he's a rent a player, as this is his contract year. Wow I'm hating this move more and more. 29 having a bad season, only signed for this season, salary bloated to the moon, gave some VERY valuable draft capitol for what looks like a expensive lemon.
$10M and a rental. I did not realize this. I think he can be better than what he has shown but I agree with you here

Apparently the Giants are paying 9 of the 10, so that helps.

Guess he's s good player but not thrilled with them trading away draft capitol. They already had a slew of DE's.

I'm not too worried about that. Pete and John have always been able to find undrafted gems.

I guess it depends on what the alternatives are.

I don't think that do nothing was a possibility, not after Nwosu went down. If Clark showed some potential on Sunday, maybe. But he didn't look great.
So then it's a question of what other players were out there. Hunter is going to cost even more and demand a monster contract.

I would have been a lot happier with Lawrence but I think Williams can play a pretty big role.

Our rotation along the defensive line is just sick. Williams isn’t just a DE, he’s a dominant player in the trenches. He will draw double teams, he is dominant against the run. He will force the quarterback to escape the pocket earlier than he wants to because of the pressure he pushes up the middle. He instantly will be one of our better defenders. He’s that good.

I'll give it a B grade for Seattle, A grade for the Giants.

I think we gave up too much but it's absolutely obvious after the Browns game that Seattle can't move on with Frank Clark... it was a good effort, but no... no no no... Frank allowed nearly 14 points alone with his absolute shit play.

Kind of have to do this to save the season. That said, it's not a horrible trade, but the Giants won it.

seems like it would be worse to give up a 2 and then let him walk

Well, it's a helluva lot cheaper than what we paid for Jamal. In Schneider we trust.
I wonder if we can get him to run the Mariners too and get rid of Dipoto?

If I heard correctly, one of the morning hosts on 710 called this exactly, saying he would give up a 2nd for this player.
At this point, I am good with this thinking our FO knows what they are doing.

To me, it will depend a lot on where that 2nd rd pick ends up. Maybe a bit steep but we will have to see how it works out. $1 mil cheap rental is fine by me. I like adding to the defense and would move him to the inside with Reed for sure. Hard to say how it plays out, given our scheme but he's a veteran who is good vs both the run and the pass.

It's a done deal so will have to hope he really helps the run defense as he can play DT also maybe this works out.

Even if he's not producing?
ya, its a risk for sure. it could turn out to be just another in a long line of moronic trades
Think I'd rather the Seahawks would have gone after Sweat:
I mentioned trading for him, but he is a different player and doesnt have the size that williams does. he fits the mold a lot of our edge rushers do, williams gives us something different and some flexibility I think

I like this better than strictly going after an edge guy. Williams gives us a veteran guy that is big enough and flexible enough to play anywhere up front and allow us to rotate guys in and out and keep everybody fresh. Not gonna put too much stock into his NY stats and whatnot because that organization is a dumpster fire. Can't expect guys to play like pro-bowlers every game when the team totally sucks ass.

As a Giants fan... our season has been an awful one that has been derailed by injuries.

So, I'm not surprised that we're sellers.

A 2nd is more than I would have hoped for for Williams. While he has value as a veteran, run-stuffing end... Big Leonard has seemed past his prime this year especially... just not the same ability to impact games.

Best of luck to y'all.

Would've been a much better move IMO...

Ah well, I'm kind of impartial on this trade, but the Giants won it..
