Russell Wilson: I want to own a team

Russell Wilson already has an impressive list of accomplishments in his brief pro career -- he's a starting quarterback in the NFL, a two-time Pro Bowler and a Super Bowl champion.

But evidently, the Seattle Seahawks star has grander plans for his future.

"I want to be an owner of a team one day, whether it's baseball or football," Wilson said Tuesday in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. "Maybe even both."

Wilson, 25, helped lead the Seahawks to the franchise's first Super Bowl championship earlier this month.

Wilson was a fourth-round draft pick of the Colorado Rockies in 2010 and was selected by the Texas Rangers in the Rule 5 draft in December. He discussed his ownership aspirations while explaining his decision to visit Texas' spring training facility next week.

"For me, I'd love to get around to as many people as I can," said Wilson, a third-round draft choice by Seattle in 2012. "Because at the end of the day, I want to learn as much as I can so that way, in my future -- down the road after playing 20 years hopefully for the Seahawks -- I can do that."

Wilson would not be the first high-profile athlete to venture into team ownership.

Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and David Beckham are among the notable sports stars who have owned at least minority shares of North American major sports franchises during their postplaying careers.

"The biggest thing is networking, first of all, and doing your job well," Wilson said. "Whenever you do something, do it the best that you possibly can and produce all the time -- whether it's playing football or communicating."
