Listen, this scares me, if you spend that much money on a player who isn't a young guy (in baseball terms) only to send him to the minors because he "might not be ready"?

Red Sox option Rusney Castillo and Jackie Bradley Jr. - Sports - The Boston Globe

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Once his record-setting $72.5 million contract with the Red Sox was complete, Rusney Castillo celebrated by buying a white Porsche Panamera Turbo S with red accents.

It’s a ride befitting a star player. But for now, Castillo will be parking it next to McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket. The outfielder was optioned to Triple A Thursday along with Jackie Bradley Jr.

It’s unusual for a healthy 27-year-old signed to such a contract to be demoted to the minor leagues. But the Red Sox, as they usually do, opted to maintain control of the most players they could at the start of the season.

The Sox will start the year with Hanley Ramirez in left field, Mookie Betts in center, and Shane Victorino in right. Allen Craig and Daniel Nava will play off the bench.

“One of the things we told [Castillo] in the conversation is that from the day he signed to now, he’s done everything we’ve asked him to do,” general manager Ben Cherington said. “He’s done everything within his control and only confirmed for us why we signed him in the first place.

“This is a long-term investment, a long-term proposition. We expect it to work out very well for him and for the Red Sox. We certainly see him as a major league player. It’s not going to be on Opening Day in 2015.”

Castillo was not made available to reporters after his demotion. Manager John Farrell said he took the news well.

“He’s a young guy who’s on a mission,” Farrell said.

Castillo said earlier in spring training that he expected to make the team but would understand if he did not, given the number of outfielders on the roster.

After the Sox signed Castillo in August, they signed Ramirez to an $88 million deal in November. When spring training started, Castillo missed time with an oblique strain and Betts established himself as the obvious choice to bat leadoff and play center.

I possibly get they couldn't forsee Mookie being as good as he is currently and that Victorino would perhaps actually be healthy, but still waste all that money, then sign Hanley for that much money is a head scratcher...

Won't spend the money on Lester, but will spend it on two players and might not even have one play?

and here is an even more scarier thing (and the Red Sox spent money)

Some Triple A time could help Castillo. Counting spring training and winter ball, he has played only 37 games and had 138 at-bats since arriving from Cuba.

Shane will struggle early and late, makes no sense not to field the best team.

Maybe he'd be better off in a low-end Toyota to use to drive to McCoy Stadium.

Victorino is made of glass. He will be injured within a month and Rusney will be up. It won't kill him to tune up in AAA anyway. He hasn't had much exposure to MLB pitching yet.

Dude showed hope in august when he got his OPS over .800 (was 2nd on the team at the time) and then just died.

I wonder if he wore out playing his first full season in years.

Not sure what to expect from him next year tbh.

That's what happens when you are over the hill and never truly played

Brock Holt will start for the Red Sox in left field against righthanded pitchers, John Farrell told reporters on Tuesday.

Farrell said in February that Chris Young would start in left field against every lefty. If that decision holds true, 28-year-old Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo, who signed a$72 million contract in 2014, will play off the bench. And Farrell noted Tuesday Castillo would be an active rotational player at every position in the outfield.

The Red Sox’ Opening Day matchup is against Indians righty ace Corey Kluber. So in all likelihood, Holt will be the Opening Day starter.

“It would be a cool experience,” Holt said, via RedSox.com. “It was cool making the Opening Day roster last year and being a part of that. Getting to play on Opening Day would be pretty special. I know it’s supposed to be pretty cold in Cleveland, but we’ll just layer up and be ready to go.”

Brock Holt will start in left field over $72-million-man Rusney Castillo

I'm not sure if they can, but if they could send him to AAA then that's where he should be. Dude still needs at bats.

Dice K says hi.

Theo did a lot for the squad though. He brought home 2 titles and was a major part of the 2013 team winning it all. And his finger prints are still all over this team.
