Rule Change: offense can never advance fumble. If they fumble and recover, the offense gets the ball back at the spot of the fumble or at the spot of recovery, whichever is further back.

AND...

If they fumble through end zone, it does not result in the other team getting a touchback. The offense just gets the ball back at the spot of the fumble.

Under such a change, when Manziel fumbled and caught the ball back and threw it for a TD against Alabama, it wouldn't be a TD anymore.

Dropping a ball on a hand off and picking it up real quick and running for it would no longer be allowed.

etc.

Nah, don't care for that.

The end zone thing I could see being ok. If they offense fumbles and it goes in the end zone, move it back to the spot of the fumble. But that is about it.

Yeah, maybe an exception for muffled hikes or some such... yeah, we wouldn't want to stop the play on that occurrence.

If the player is not down when he picks up a fumble then he should be able to advance it. Kinda like that rule the way it is. On the endzone fumbles I agree it needs to be changed. I'd like to see something like this: if offense keeps the ball when it goes out of bounds then the ball is placed 10 yards back from spot of the fumble. If the defense keeps the ball then it is not a touchback but they get the ball at the spot of the fumble.

This would make it much more worth it for a player to attempt to recover the fumble rather than just smack it out of bounds.

Does that include if a player recovers his own fumble? That's dumb.

Not crazy about this at all. I essence QB fumbles the shotgun snap best you can hope for is deadball by falling on it.

terrible changes. I wasnt even a fan of the "Stabler rule" in the first place. As long as the fumble is not intentional (as in thrown forward like the "holy roller"). It was an over-reaction then and it is just getting worse. It would be nice if football just let logic dictate the rules.

If the second one was a rule last year we might have beaten Alabama lol

Not really sure I like the first one though. The defense could just hit the ball as far up the field as they can knowing that the offense will just have to come back to around the original LOS if they recover it

I would put this change in the same category as the experimental rank of corporal-captain (out of G2 and G3 making G5 combined officer's opt-tech-glitch).

I don't like. I don't like it one bit!

How about you can't advance a fumble at all/offense or defense.

Tennessee fans are thinking this is 10 years too late...

Well, it's about 5 years too late for us. Remember the Mark Ingram fumble against Auburn in 2010 that seemed to role 30 yards in a straight line out the back of the end zone?

I missed most of that game for work thankfully, but I do remember seeing that on the highlights :sigh:

Skip to 3:00. Does anyone know how to link to that specific minute mark?

Anyway, why would anyone want a rule that would make that illegal?
