I'm not hearing much on our end in terms of re-signing him. I'd love to have him back and am a bit worried that some other team like the NYG, who've shown an interest in him, will scoop him up. If he doesn't return, who will replace Helu? Yes, the guy has problems with pass-pro (and blocking in general). But he's much of an asset than a liability.

We can get someone to fill his role through the draft, or hell maybe Thompson stays healthy....Maybe Lacke comes back a year improved since out of FB.....Helu is ok at best.....

Unfortunately, Thompson can get injured eating lunch. And the fact that no one has picked up Lache Seastrunk ought to tell us something. Maybe we're holding out for Reggie Bush. But we could do far worse than Helu.

I think Silas is still in our plans. He looks like a good backup, so long as he holds on to the ball. (Ditto for Morris.)
Was more wondering if the plan was to develop Redd, if Helu were to go

I'm not sure that Redd is the third-down type of back that Helu is. Helu is pretty darn good at catching the ball out of the backfield. The only other guy that fits that mold right now is Chris Thompson.

Yeah, tho Thompson has been injured more often than not so far.

Was simply speculating about the development plan for Silas... I thought I remembered Redd with a couple catches last year (tho I think there were some drops too).

They are going to let Helu test the waters. This is a prudent move. He will get some interest, but it won't be significant. Once his market value I'd determined, they will extend an offer to keep him. Helu is good with the ball in his hands, but sucks in other critical areas. If we can keep him, great. If not, we cam replace his production with Thompson, redd, and RB to be named later. One that can pass block hopefully.

Understand that he was 2nd in the league in yards gained via screen plays. Again, he's not bad with the ball in his hands. Maybe if we actually had a coaching staff that could develop players weaknesses......

Alfred Morris Stats - Washington Redskins - ESPN

Morris - are you serious? He fumbled twice last year & didn't lose either one. How exactly is he supposed to improve on that?

He's had fumbling issues in the past and that's been noted by commentators. I'll take your word for it that he only fumbled twice but he ended up losing balls on plays where a penalty was called that raised concerns about his ball security. Perhaps others can chime in on this

Do not gloss over his pass blocking as simply a minor issue. That is job 1 for 3rd down back. Helu is a one trick pony who can't even contribute on special teams (remember the whiff on the punt block that lost the Houston game?). I've been saying for months that we can do better.

As for Morris and his fumbling yes it's been a minor issue. Nothing major but it is real.

This is why interest in him will be tepid. You are right, he is a one trick pony. I'm ok for bringing him back, but only for the right price. I often wondered why we never had him return kick offs. It would seem to me that this would be right up his alley.

As flush as we've been with returners over the years why would we risk injury to the great Roy Helu by putting him returning kicks?
