Rizzo's 4th at-bat? Blooper to left NOT a hit?

Wait wait what?!? Runners on 1st and 2nd, one out. Rizzo pops one into shallow left. Runner at 2nd has to stay around the short stop area to see if the left fielder is going to catch it and possibly double him up at 2nd. The ball drops uncaught, left fielder fields it on one bounce, and forces out the runner going to 3rd. Cubs announcers say that is a 7-5 fielder's choice, and Rizzo does NOT get credit for his 4th hit of the game. Huh?

Official Rules: 2.00 Definition of Terms
"FIELDER'S CHOICE is the act of a fielder who handles a fair *GROUNDER* and, instead of throwing to first base to put out the batter-runner, throws to another base in an attempt to put out a preceding runner. The term is also used by scorers (a) to account for the advance of the batter-runner who takes one or more extra bases when the fielder who handles his safe hit attempts to put out a preceding runner; (b) to account for the advance of a runner (other than by stolen base or error) while a fielder is attempting to put out another runner; and (c) to account for the advance of a runner made solely because of the defensive teams indifference (undefended steal). A force out is a force out no matter how it occurs. No surprise a Cub fan doesn't understand the game.

Every fan base has their "special" section...

I gotta say, though, I was surprised to see the OP with 4500 posts. 4500 posts would lead me to think that a basic understanding exists.

Not knowing that a blooper to the outfield with less than 2 outs and runners in a forced situation, and the Left Fielder forcing-out the indecisive runner at 3rd, thus preventing the batter from being credited a HIT... does NOT underscore a BASIC misunderstanding of the game.

If someone didn't know that a regular grounder fielder's choice [which this was not by definition] prevented the batter from being credited a hit, then that would underscore a basic misunderstanding of what constitutes a hit.

a Fielder's Choice [which it was not, by the way] implies that the FIELDER had the CHOICE to get the batter out, but chose otherwise... this was not the case in this play.... so, intuitively, giving Rizzo credit for a hit seems the FAIR thing to do even if it is NOT, per the rules, the TECHNICALLY CORRECT thing to do.
