Rivals continue roster shenanigans

The San Francisco 49ers-Seattle Seahawks rivalry continues to burn with a potential rubber match looming in the postseason.

The teams have long been rivals and that competition got turned up a notch Sunday when the 49ers beat Seattle 19-17 in the final seconds to split the season series.

On Tuesday, the 49ers celebrated their win by continuing the roster poaching the two teams have recently engaged in. San Francisco signed guard Ryan Seymour off the Seahawks' practice squad. They also signed returner/receiver Devon Wylie, who was cut from the Seahawks' practice squad Saturday. Seymour was a seventh-round draft pick by Seattle this year.

The rivals have made a habit of signing or claiming players the other team cut.

Among the former 49ers the Seahawks have brought in in recent memory are Ricardo Lockette, Brett Swain, B.J. Daniels, Mike Person and Perrish Cox. Not all of those players remain in Seattle. The list of players who went from Seattle to San Francisco includes Cameron Morrah, Chris Harper, Charly Martin and Seneca Wallace. None of those players remains in San Francisco.

While most of these moves are bottom-of-the-roster shenanigans, it is clear this has become a big part of the rivalry.

Seymour was surprised by a Monday morning call from his agent, saying he was on his way back to San Francisco.

"I wasn't expecting, this late in the season, to be called up by a team," Seymour said after his first day of practice with the 49ers. "I'll certainly take advantage of my opportunities."

Seymour was the last player off the practice field as he tried to learn as much of the offensive system as he could.

The rookie from Vanderbilt is listed third on the 49ers' depth chart at left guard behind Mike Iupati and Joe Looney.

Seymour was released by the Seahawks and then added to their practice squad in early September.

"We got home late Sunday and my agent called at 6 a.m.," Seymour said. "I made the same flight 24 hours later."

He was on the sideline at Candlestick Park during the Seahawks' loss to the 49ers on Sunday.

"It might have been easy just to walk across the field," he said. "But I did have some packing to do and I had to take care of a few other things."

We will see a lot more of this during the next year, even ESPN analyst's commented last week how many teams have been snatching up guys that we cut after training camp.

It's interesting they mentioned Lockette, because he actually exemplifies this more than anyone. They didn't mention that the 9ers picked him up from the Seahawks last year, and the Seahawks just took him back this year. It's been interesting seeing how these two teams keep up with the other teams roster moves.

Humorous? Sure. It's kind of funny to see these two rival raid each other. Mostly just amounts to nothing at the end however.

I'm a little bummed we couldn't figure a way to hang on to BJ Daniels. I think he could have developed into a solid and fitting backup for Russell.

I thought the same thing when the Niners let him go. He seemed to be raw but with a ton of upside in the pre-season.
