We can compare all things catcher to Bench, whose offense was acceptable and fit nicely into a lineup where everyone else pulled his weight. When left to his own devices, Bench was still not a great hitter.

When bench was gone, There was a void at catcher that has never been completely filled. Some were close but never the same

The 1962 Mets would have to be the benchmark for bad teams. Their team total WAR was 6.0

The 2016 Reds current team WAR is -1.1

Sad..... they're going to have to improve to catch the 1962 Mets.

If you add the pitching WAR into the equation it's even worse.

Mets 9.1
Reds -3.0

I don't think we needed to look at metrics to know that this is a terrible team, but it puts just how bad this team has played into perspective.

It's one thing to "go the Houston way" by saying "the Reds are rebuilding". But don't the management of this team see that they are on a path that might be historical as far as being the worst team in the modern day era maybe ever. They don't even seem to care. It's like they are on vacation, because they have a freebee. They are embarrassment. And they are in denial if they think this team is going to get much better in the near future.

I'm sorry this probably should be on anther page, but in the far future someone will ask " What was the worst team in Major league history. And the answer will be the Cincinnati Reds from 2016 - 2023, or something like that

Trying to remember Reds lineups from 1982 forward is like counting chickens.

Here's the guy who "replaced" Bench for a short time.

JOE WHO?

Alex Trevino, Dave Van Gorder were catchers in 82. Bo Diez came a long and did a fair job for a few years. He was killed after he retired. struck by lighting putting up a TV antenna.

Joe Oliver came along in 89 and pretty much was the catcher for a while. Here's a guy that caught the most games in 1981 Joe Nolan. Not sure where he went after that

Joe Nolan had his best hitting years while he was with the Reds. No power and not a good defensive catcher, but batted over. 300 both years in Cincinnati. He didn't do much after being traded to the Orioles.

Then came Alex Trevino who the Reds got in the George Foster trade. One of a few trades that yielded very little other than dumping payroll that off season.

The Bo Diaz tragedy was caused by being crushed while attempting to adjust a satellite on his roof if I remember right. That must have been one hell of a big dish.

Dave van Gorder..... that's a name I remember after Eburg mentioned him, but I would have never came up with that one if he was the answer to a question.

I remember, when those dishes first came out they were big. I also remember it was free then to. Only because the technology to block it was not there yet.

Here's some other names from the past. Do you remember Dan Bilardello and Brad Gulden. They had a guy in the bullpen 1984 by the name of Brad Lesley, I remember he did some different things on the mound but I can't remember what.

Lesley, Wasn't he one of the first to do a fist pump or something like that after he struck somebody out. or he might of screamed and pounded his chest. He did something that was considered controversial back then

First guy I ever saw be that animated was Al Hrbosky, the Mad Hungarian. Today's he is just boring.

There is a whole cast of characters from the 80s who I don't remember. After 1982, I shut down the Reds for a long time. I fear that might happen again and I don't expect to have enough years to rebuild a relationship with the franchise. Lucky for me, I have access to game video. In the 80s, that wasn't possible.

When the Reds got Junior from the Mariners, I think we all believed the corner had been turned. Even so, those first years were a dud. Cincy could have won the 06 Central.

All they needed was some pitching.

IF...is the middle word in LIFE. Where would the BRM have been if they never traded Frank Robinson ? Dunno, but they probably wouldn't have played Geronimo, or traded for Foster, or maybe, not lost to the Orioles in '70, or the A's in '72. The Reds would have still stunk in '82.

So ultimately, maybe it always becomes what it was meant to be, in time.

Here's my trivia question- the Reds finished last in their division last season-HOW MANY YEARS WAS IT BETWEEN LAST PLACE FINISHES FOR THE REDS ?

The Reds finishing last was noteworthy in that it ended the longest streak of not finishing in last place among all professional teams. Back to back last place in 1982-83.

They had a longer streak prior to 1982 that extended all the way back to 1937. The Reds finished last 5 times during that decade. Hopefully they don't break that franchise record.
