Except for when you did:
Your quote:
considering an 85-86 win team to be no where near competitive

What I said:
I just think they don't see the potential to contend next season

Those are two very different statements. Fuck, a .500 team is competitive in my eyes so why wouldn't an 85 win team?

And I know the playoffs are a crap shoot but I truly think if the Yankees thought they could contend next season they would be in on Price/Grienke. Shit, they could be in on Grienke for all we know, but going by what I know right now (which is nothing because I'm an idiot and it's also past 3 so I'm drunk too) it seems like they're taking it easy.

Big money for a guy that can't win a playoff game. What do you think?

Small sample size over a 6 year span. What was Kershaw's playoff record before 2015? Still, the Mets won a 5 game series when the Dodgers started Kershaw and Greinke in 4 of them. You just never know even when you get great pitching.

It just takes 1 year with the right team. I don't like the years, but I will take my chances with Price. You can't win the WS unless you make the playoffs first, and Price helps the Sox do that.

"nowhere near competitive" ≠ "no potential to contend"

Maybe something's been lost in the translation from English to Canadian, eh?

In related, breaking news, the Indians just spent what they consider a fortune on a pile of gay shit poured into some baseball cleats.

Oh, happy day.

I don't agree with that. I think that with the shift to teams locking up young players into or through their primes, the economic landscape of baseball is changing and they're adjusting their strategy to those changes.
Yes, the shift is moving toward holding young players as long as you can. But still, I just think the brothers are more concerned with the bottom line than the old man was.

As A Red Sox fan I'm glad we got Price but yeah 31 million a year is to much.

I agree he's an excellent pitcher that will help them get to the playoffs but over 30 mil a year AND an opt out after 3 years. SO if he's pitching lights out after 3 years he can try and cash in again (Far fetched since he'll be 33 but possible). But that might get the ox out of the last few years of the contract

Given Strasburg's performance over the last three seasons, I don't think he's the attraction he once was. He'll be 28 as a free agent, so that's a plus, but he's going to need to step it up next year if he wants one of these mega deals.

Harper is under Nats control for another three seasons and will be 26 years old if he hits FA on schedule. If he continues this production, that kid will probably get a contract north of $450MM.
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Strasburg. He's been hurt a few times and he's been up and down. Yes, he is a front line starter and he's posted some good numbers but there's just something about him that makes me not trust him. Starting pitching is hard to come by so he's valuable. I just would not want to build around him.

I am just worried about what this means in the future... We are going to get up to 300-400 million dollar contracts

Believe me, I'm praying he opts out after 3 years. I figure our window with him is 3-4 good years, and hope we get 1 championship. That will justify the whole contract for me. As you said, it is far-fetched that he actually leaves $127mm on the table at age 33 even if he's pitching great.

Far fetched but not out of the question.

Forgot to mention LET'S GO RANGERS!

I'm praying that Price opts out at the most inopportune time for Yankees Lite, which forces Dombrowski to double down and outbid himself to keep him.

Yes. Guaranteed. If Harper keeps this up and hits free agency as a 26 year old, expect a $450MM contract.

Dodgers are talking about giving Greinke $210mm for 6 years. That's $35mm AAV. It doesn't take long for the $$$'s to get crazy.

What will Bryce Harper get? There is your first 300-400mm player.
