What an absolutely fantastic letter in today's Roanoke Times from Marshall's president.
On behalf of Marshall University, our athletic department and the
Thundering Herd community, I am writing to express our appreciation to
your Virginia Tech supporters and football coach Frank Beamer for their
contributions to a tremendous game day experience last weekend in
Huntington. We were honored to play host to the Hokies and Hokies
fans. We were humbled by the respect shown to our university and the
tribute paid by Coach Beamer and his football team to the 1970 plane
crash victims. We also could not help but notice that hundreds of
Virginia Tech fans toured our campus, and most notably, respectfully
visited the Memorial Fountain on the Student Center Plaza.
The class exhibited by Virginia Tech is unsurpassed. Marshall fans
enjoyed sharing food and good-natured barbs with Hokies fans in the
tailgating parking lots before the game, and despite the loss on the
gridiron, were happy to shake hands, congratulate Hokies fans and
wish them well after the game.
Although this game will go down as a loss in the record books for us,
the game day atmosphere will always be remembered as a victory for
Marshall University and the city of Huntington. We hope to continue this
football series and look forward to welcoming the Hokies back to
Huntington. Virginia Tech supporters have a great reason to be proud of
their outstanding football program. Your program is a class act.
