Even the Great Orlando Pace, at age 33, played only the most part of his first year in a 3 year deal with the Bears.

And how did that work out for the Bears?

We are talking about HOF players/athletes with Peppers and Pace. Possibly the best ever at their position.

I'm not going to argue, that is rare. Whitworth has played his best ball in the last few years, but you never know.
Don't think he is arguing Battleyon, rather discussing. That's what forums like this were designed for, discussions.

The problem with aging vets, even the great ones, are the injuries that always seem to pop up late in their careers.

By this NFL age, they just don't have the same vigor to try and come back. Look no further than the groin injury that ended the Big O's career and playing just one year of his three year deal. He left nearly ~$9M of his $15M/3 year deal on the table and the Bears were with left with that cap hit the next two years.

Yeah, I think you may have mistook my point, I was supporting your position with that post.

I wouldn't give him more than a 1 year deal with a team option for a 2nd. His cap hit for 2016 was $8M (1 year contract), but that contract was only guaranteed for $1M with performance bonuses and roster bonuses. If that was the best he could get coming off Pro Bowl appearances in 2015 and 2016, first team All-Pro in 2015 ,and second team All-Pro in 2014, why throw a 3 year, $10M per deal at him at his elevated age? The Bengals want him back, but they are also considering moving him inside to guard.

From Spotrac:
  • $1M of 2016 salary fully guaranteed (signing bonus)
  • 2016 per game bonus: $62,500
  • 2016 workout bonus: $200,000
  • Pro Bowl bonus: $1.2M
  • $1M signing bonus
  • $1M roster bonus
  • $5.8M base salary

I like that

I don't know, if you talk the best DE and not say it is Deacon Jones it should be blasphemy in the Rams forum.

The only thing that concerns me, is the team that knows him so well wants to move him to Guard.

Should be sort of a red flag but still they may have a plan for another OL man to take over the LT duties, we don't really have a plan so it could be the better fit for us next year.

He certainly would garner a higher 1 year deal at LT with us than at G with them.

That is why I said earlier I like Riley earlier more so because of his age, anyway you look at its slim pickens at LT in free agency with no first rounder, just as much slim pikens in the draft. That and I think we could use veteran leadership on the offensive line.

Before my time. I know he was a beast. Peppers is probably the best one I've seen and one of the best athletes all time in the NFL.

I am a frustrated and lost NFL fan is what I am. Rooting for players. If Tampa gets Dalvin Cook look out. Right now the Rams are in Timeout, but i like the coaching moves.

Some folks must be really bored and wintered-out if they are not focusing in on leadership by signing aging vets. Geez, what next? Maybe we should think about re-signing O. Pace!

So if the offensive tackles available in FA this year are not in the top 20 of their position and older than 27-28, most likely they won't be getting much better. So the money would be better spent on Tru (one of the top CBs) and draft an OT either early that looks good or a "project" which means 3rd or 4th round.. NOT 1st or 2nd round. :L

So we would solidify our secondary with signing Tru and TJ.. Then need to look at Jeffrey or Garcon in FA and look to the draft for Oline. LB? We could sign and draft as well.

See - it's not difficult Rams..

i was thinking I'd rather have Orlando right now for $5 million than any FA OT's at $10-15 million.

It will be interesting to see how much Tru will ask for.

There's a guy with a sack that plays angry! Sign him up!
I knew you would get a kick out of that...

I'm pretty sure you'll agree, the Big O at age 41, would probably still be an upgrade at LT to anyone we have on the roster!!

Yeah, the two options mentioned have either been moved to RT or G by their current teams. Doesn't make me very enthusiastic. Matt Kalil is also a UFA, but can't imagine the Vikes will let him go. He's coming off his 5th year option just like Reiff and made $11M last year.

I can see them trying to tag him or sign him to a long term deal shopson, but he may think it's going to take upwards of 5yr/~$60M to sign him. To tag him I think it's about ~$13.5M, but considering he was on IR last year, they may let him test the waters on the open market and go from there.

The Vikings probably have a better idea of his true market value, where he may think the values stated above are about right, it maybe more like 4yr/~$43M for an injured LT, so tagging him doesn't make much sense to me.
