Gruden wanted more control.

I bet they were hoping that Reggie would see the writing on the wall and walk out on his own.....
This was going to happen with Gruden onboard and we'll see if Chucky 2.0 is any better at personnel matters.
i think his contract pays him through 2020 ... he didn't want to give up millions of dollars by quitting ... can't blame him.

He better with all those 1st round picks next year.
Everything I've been seeing is that he was likely leaving at the end of the year anyway and he was given a choice to stay til then or not. Honestly, I think he did a pretty good job for the most part.
He and JDR did a pretty good job while they were there.
The assumption was they fired JDR because they wanted to get to the next level and just not make the playoffs (the 1 time we made it) and be an actual contender.
Gruden came in and it's now turned into a total rebuild after he convinced Davis it was needed or what is best.
And that's the problem. Oakland wants to be elite or nothing, which is harder to do than being competitive.
