For those of you that know about gambling.

I was looking at the boxing match coming up for instance.

Had Mayweather at -270
Alvarez +230

what does that mean? how do you calculate winnings off those #'s? Say if you were betting 50 bucks?

Schmoopy 1000, I believe it means that Mayweather is a heavy favorite to win, and to bet on him you would have to put $270 to win $200. While betting on Alvarez you could win $230 while risking only $200.

Notice that whoever wins the fight the bookie will get what's called "vigorish". It is essentially the fee he charges for providing the service.

pretty sure those numbers are based on 100, not 200. so risk 100 to win 230 on Alvarez and risk 270 to win 100 on Mayweather. at least thats how it was when i was betting :noidea:

I agree with oakknights.

From my football betting experience(I go to vegas once per year in the summer/fall, and again in the spring), the betting is based on $100 start bet.

Mayweather -270 if you want to win $100 you have to bet 270. If Mayweather wins you get back $370

Alvarez +230 The casino will pay you $230, if Alvarez wins you get back $330

With those paybacks, that means most of Vegas has bet on Mayweather. The casinos are begging for Alvarez bettors.
