You're right, flukes do happen. The United States also should've beaten Germany in 2002 if I recall correctly. Wasn't there a hand ball in the box or something controversial that kept the United States from tying it up? This is probably the best USA team to go to a World Cup, but I just don't see them doing much. We got screwed with the group we were put in.

Yes that's exactly what happened in 2002. And yes, I believe FIFA fucked us intentionally. I still say we've got a good chance of beating Ghana, and anything can happen against Portugal and Germany. Frankly, I just don't think Portugal is the powerhouse many do.

I agree with your point about Portugal. Outside of CR7 they are very average. If the US can neutralize CR7, which is easier said than done, then the US can win.
