The San Diego Padres have agreed to a six-year, $35 million contract extension with second baseman Jedd Gyorko, confirms Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. The club will make the announcement official at 1:30 local time in San Diego.
Gyorko, 25, hit .249/.301/.444 with 26 doubles, 23 homers and 63 RBI last season. He finished sixth in NL Rookie of the Year voting. So far this season, Gyorko is hitting .163/.229/.302 with a double, triple, homer and seven RBI. The former second-rounder was a career .321/.386/.530 hitter in the minors and entered last season as a top-50 prospect according to some outlets.
The six-year deal eats up the last two pre-arbitration years for Gyorko in addition to his three arbitration years and one year of free agency. Gyorko's 2014 salary is $511,000, so this is a pretty huge payday for the youngster. By the same token, if Gyorko makes good on his upside during the course of the deal, it will end up being a major bargain for San Diego.

Big pay day for the former 'Eer!
