From one camera angle it looked like he was stuff while on another it looks like he clearly crossed the 1st down mark.

Thoughts?

Didn't look like he got a bad spot and it was impossible to tell from the camera angles.

They really needed to have a camera view from the opposite sideline which would've gave us a clear answer

I hear they might have been discussing this in the game thread.

I already commented.

The spot looks bad, but the replay official can only overturn a call if its 100% clear.

The burden of proof is seemingly 100 times tighter in college than the NFL.

3 games this week (Iowa State/Texas, Oklahoma State/KState, OSU/NW) all had huge replays where the losing team probably got hosed a bit on bad calls that likely determined outcomes.

But, I appreciate the hardline stance of the college replay.
As long as college keeps this extremely tight replay system intact. I am okay with it.

Although the referees could have done it fairly, and moved the ball only an inch.

That would not have changed anything, but it would not have cost NW a timeout.

I believe by rule they only get the TO back if they overturn the call and it becomes a first down.

I think (not 100% certain)

If you challenge a spot....you get a timeout back if the challenge works.

Technically, you are challenging the spot.

You don't need to be challenging a first down when you challenge a spot.
You can do it anywhere at anytime.
You can challenge a spot 20 yards shy of the marker.

You are not challenging the first down.....even though that was the real intention.

The referees marked it about 1/2 yard shy.

Technically, they could move the ball up and award NW a "good" challenge.

Since the initial spot looked bad, the "FAIR" thing to do was nudge it up a bit and keep the TO intact.

That would make both sides happy.

I thought he had to from the overhead view, but i completely understand leaving it at the spot and not confirming it.

I thought it was a bit of a weak spot too (no-homer) but the fumble really fucked the whole thing up...

And I am certain that you are incorrect. You cannot challenge a spot. You can only challenge whether the player made the line to gain.

Here are two things from the NCAA 2014 Football Rules Case Book:

"The first situation is whether a player made the line to gain or not,
either for a first down or the goal line. If the runner is ruled down or
his forward progress is stopped we can review that spot in relation
to the line to gain. If the line to gain is not involved then that spot
is not reviewable
."

"25. Spot of ball not involved with a first down or goal line
Second and 10 on the B-29. Runner A22 is tackled in bounds at the Team B
20-yard line. The Line Judge spots the ball at the Team B 21-yard line. Ruling:
Not reviewable, as the spot does not involve a first down of the goal
line. A 3-2 on B-21 (Rule 12-3-3-e)."
