Is justified because the Phillies are more than a year away from being a true contender. I'm in denial, I hate it, and I joke about it, but those 1-year contracts Klentak is handing out to guys with experience allow the Phils to stay competitive during this developmental phase. Quick overview of where things stand:

The starting rotation will have time to mature and young relievers' arms will be preserved for a better day. How will the outfield take shape alongside Herrera? Quinn, Nick Williams, and Altherr will battle for a spot alongside old man Kendrick, and Cozens should be ready by 2018, maybe sooner. Can't forget about Cam Perkins.

The Phillies are solid at catcher with Rupp and Alfaro in '17, at third, Franco, and at first base with Joseph and I suppose, Stassi/Knapp, with Hoskins on the way by '18. It's difficult to predict how 2nd and short will evolve from Hernandez and Galvis but Crawford, Valentin, and Kingery down the road will figure into that decision. Key trades next year can change much of this.

It will be interesting to see how these guys work out, and my guess is that the Phils can notch 10 more wins next year for a .500 season.

I would agree, these 1 year contracts are not a huge deal and it gets us a few more wins.

In the end we should be close to .500 ball this year. Last year I was a little high on the Phills and expected them to go 78 and 84. I was hoping for a few of our prospects be moved up last year and produce but that never happened. It seems like it should happen this year.

Only 53 more days left till pitchers and catchers.

I have no problems with the one year contracts. Not like the old days that Amaro would block out our
minor league prospects. I doubt that this will be a winning season but I can always hope. The team is
going to struggle for homeruns. However a better bullpen will help. But No real closer as of yet.

Yeah, Howard's missing homers. Let's see, Rupp/Alfaro, 30, Joseph/Knapp, 30, Franco, 47, Herrera, 22, Galvis, 20, Kendrick, 20. Hell, no worries. 170's good! Relax! :pound:

Wait, you're penciling in Franco for 47 bombs? I like it!
Also, I'm putting together a consortium with a couple other guys on here to pool our money and purchase your cassette collection. The $50 seems a little high but we'll be hitting you up with a counter offer in the near future.

Franco goes into beast mode next year. He was just screwing around this past season. I've decided extreme demand dictates a price increase to $105 for the high tech music cassettes. After all, we're talking about the greatest hits of big stars like porter wagner and ferlin husky.

Husky and Wagner! How about Jim Reeves and Eddie Arnold? That would be worth another $100.00.

I give Klentak credit.

He saw 2018 as the first year that this team could reasonably expect to compete, and has done as much as possible to stockpile assets that would help in getting the team ready for that. Adding potential deadline assets is a smart move for a team with the payroll flexibility that the Phillies have.

I agree. There is no way that he can speed things up for 2017. Prospects are still developing. Plus maybe
one of the recent hires could be a keeper.

Wait, what? No Foghat, Steely Dan or Alice Cooper?

Nice to see Tocci coming along, and the organization taking patience with him. It appears to be paying off.

Of these 3, only Tocci is an actual prospect.

Stassi is 27 and is .263/.347/.390 in six years. He's shown some power the last two years at REA and LHV, hitting 27
homers. A decent bench guy or a good trade throw in at least.

Perkins, 26, hit .292/.329/.419 this season in his 2nd shot with at LHV. Only did .216 there in '14. I'd like to see both in spring training. They gotta be a step up from lamers Lough, Hunter, Paredes, etc.

I might be willing to chip in some cash for the collection as long as you might be willing to chip in for my venture

I'm trying to get a Strat-O-Matic Baseball Play-by-Mail (in common parlance PBM) league going

I like the idea, but I'm afraid we'd be fighting over who gets to be the Phillies.

I am still trying to figure out what this guy is going to do other than take a roster spot in the minors and what the Phillies are reaching for here. His 6.04 ERA, 11.3 H/9 and 2.3 HR/9 during a brief 47 2/3 inning stint with Texas isn't anything spectacular. It's pedestrian at best and he is 32. Somebody in the Phillies is doing a lot of hoping here, thus the minors placement, because he once tossed 276 innings of 3.49 ERA ball, averaging 7.2 strikeouts and 3.6 walks per nine innings pitched from 2011 to 2015. Haven't we been doing this a lot in recent history and what is the net?

I just see this as they need more lefties in camp. He's probably one of the first cuts.
