i saw the discussion on twitter asking why dont failed hockey players pick up long track and someone used Cindy Klaasen as an example ... she was cut fromt he Nagano womens hockey team so she took up speed skating and won 5 at torino :noidea:

then cbc vancouver local news did a story on the richmond speed skating oval (which is now a multi purpose facility and cant even be used for long track anymore), talked to some kids playing hockey there and when asked about speed skating one of them said "im not down with the spandex" lol

Anton Gafarov (Russia) moment in cross country was pretty touching. Had a crash on a downhill section and partly broke his ski. Laid down crying for a moment (knowing his Olympics were over) and then got up. Got back up and kept going even though he had no chance of advancing and his equipment was broken. Ski completely fell apart as he went down the last hill. Coach runs out and gives him a new ski. He skies it all the way home and claps to the crowd several times down the final stretch.

Yeah, I watched that. The best moments are not always the ones where someone wins.

A lot of props to the female snowboarder who went down so hard it broke her helmet. She got up and got herself to the finish.

Just in a bit of a down cycle, I reckon. The Dutch certainly have a long tradition of speed skating excellence though (and I think they're pissed for a disappointing showing (at least in their eyes) in Vancouver).

It really is their sport of kings from what I understand. Probably spend a great deal of their athletic funds on it.

Yeah, I'd say soccer is still number one in Holland, but speed skating is likely a close 2nd.

Ugh, this is going to be heartbreaking....I'd rather get DNF'ed than finish 4th

The USA needed that bronze. A few of their medal favourites failed to deliver today.

I think we'll all tiptoe around that statement.......

Hopefully bong pulling will be an Olympic event one day. That way Michael Phelps could make a comeback.

Yeah White fell twice. Pretty sure every American wiped out and there are no Americans ranked higher than 7th. One more run each.

White will kill it on his second run like he always does. Then we get to bask in his glory and listen to Bob Costas gush over him....

Wasn't he complaining about the steepness of the inclines prior to the Olympics? Maybe he was right.

Did he defect from Russia and now competes for Switzerland (or is it an ESPN screw up?)

Up to White now just to get an American on the podium. Thought they would sweep the medals in this
