ST. LOUIS -- Juan Lagares is getting closer to a return from a strained intercostal muscle on his right side.
Lagares, who last appeared with the Mets on June 1, took live batting practice for the first time since landing on the disabled list on Monday in Port St. Lucie, Fla., including against John Lannan.
Also at the Mets' Florida complex:
• Dillon Gee threw off the mound for the first time since suffering his side-muscle injury. Gee hoped he could be in a rehab game after one more throwing session, although pitching coach Dan Warthen has indicated that throwing a live batting practice session might be an intermediate step. Gee is due to visit the Mets this weekend in Miami.
• Lannan, working back into pitching shape after a seven-week absence that has not been publicly explained, indicated he plans to pitch two innings in a game Friday, likely in the Gulf Coast League. Lannan will be assigned to Triple-A Las Vegas as a starter when he is ready to compete at that level.
