I reckon it was voted on by the other SEC schools and since it was sort of a tradition at MSU they voted that they could keep using them. I think it may have been either McElroy or JPW that said it they thought it was easier to play with cowbells than it was with regular loud ass road crowd noise. Something about it almost ends up being a constant drone and you can kind of just get used to it.
