Last night’s Game 1 of the 2010 Stanley Cup Final produced the best overnight rating for a Game 1 in 11 years. The 2.8 overnight rating and 6 share for the Philadelphia Flyers-Chicago Blackhawks Game 1 is the best since 1999 (Buffalo vs. Dallas, 3.7 on Fox). NBC also won the night finishing No. 1 in primetime (1.7, A18-49).

The game—broadcast by NBC Sports on the Saturday night of Memorial Day weekend—also saw a 12-percent increase over last year’s Game 1 (Pittsburgh vs. Detroit, 2.5 on NBC), which was also on a Saturday night but not played during Memorial Day Weekend and was between the then-defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins, featuring Sidney Crosby.

The 2.8 overnight rating also ranks as the highest overnight rating for a Game 1 played on a Saturday in 13 years (since 1997 Detroit- Philadelphia, 5.1 on Fox).

Chicago led all markets with a 16.8 rating and 35 share. Philadelphia followed with a 13.2 rating and 25 share.

Yay hockey! I'm sure it helps that the Finals feature two American cities in different regions of the country that support their sports' teams well.

is it wrong that I didn't watch it?

I taped the game (my daughter had a dance recital.... how good of a dad am I?), but when I heard the score on the radio on the way home, I just couldn't bring myself to hear that fucking song six times.

That's why it got such good ratings...because it was 2 different teams with large fan bases that haven't been there for a while...

That's great news ! The ratings have been going up and maybe some of the spors fans in this country are starting to understand what us hockey fans have known for a long time.

It's a great game and if you can get a person to go to a game for the first time there's a good chance they will get to love it.

dash, Did they have a top ten listing for areas? I'm curious to see where Buffalo came in. I know it's probably top five but just wondering.

i think it's mostly because it's two bigger markets (although the past two had the advantage of having wider fan bases...detrioters and pittsburghers are ALL over the world. scattered people from years of bad economy) and something new. it's great to see though. it was an exciting game, and good for a new fan, being that it was crazy high scoring.

I have a confession. I actually really like the song Chelsea Dagger (though I was sick of it by the end of game 1). I also like Crowd Chant, the Wild theme song.

I actually like almost every other goal song in the NHL more than Bro Hymn. It would be a lot better of a song after some sort of tragedy on the team, not that I would ever want that. As it is now, it just kinda sounds like howling.

The song I really want for a goal song is this:

Heck, maybe it could help us SCORE on breakaways. What a novel concept.

I am actually surprised Detroit's ratings are always so high since most hockey fans that I know watch the games on CBC.
I really like the higher ratings though. I wonder how much of an impact the Olympics have on these ratings and if it will continue into next year if it is a carryover from it.

This is the point of getting as many games on national network TV as possible...I'm sure the numbers and number of non-hockey-market cities in the top 10 will be drastically different on Versus.

I wonder how many transplanted Canadians (along with northern US folks) make up that Sin City ratings number. That said, great to see. Any chance Bruckheimer still wants to put a team in Vegas?

I'm one and yes it's great to see ratings numbers like that for here.

Talk about a new arena are coming up more frequently. Four proposals presented to Clark County commissioners about two weeks ago. All four are 20,000+ plus seats.

PROPOSALS HEARD: Arena projects touted as magnets for jobs - News - ReviewJournal.com

Not sure about Bruckheimer and any advances on getting a team here, but a new arena would open a lot of eyes.

Harry Reid, the Senator, isn't a hockey fan, and his son is the Chairman of the Clark County Commission. So who knows how this could impact the chances of the NHL coming here.

wow to Seattle

ive bashed that city as a potential NHL market for some time now but that number is eye catching to me. Im slowly swinging to the other side and now believe they are primed for a winter season home team to follow and fill the sports void with the Supes gone. Did anyone catch this story last week ... Starbucks puts up a corporate facebook group to publicize their "we love our home fans" promotion and it was hijacked by Sonics fans going off on Howard Schultz ... some funny stuff ... Starbucks Promotion Turned Into Yet Another SuperSonics Protest

on that note ... they need an arena!!!

If it wasnt repeat season would NBC or any other US network want to show primetime games, even the finals? I doubt it. So I am not sure how many more games would be wanted.

The ratings are very promising and reason to be happy, but its also really good news that the ratings have been increasing on Versus.

Realistically the down side is that other shows had more viewers on both Saturday night and Monday, but the NHL won the key 18-49 demographic.

This is a time of the year when there are not many new things on, so the finals are facing off against reruns and dumped shows. If there were still new programs on I doubt the games would have done as well, and I doubt the games would have been during primetime.

Even so, best ratings in 30 years is still a very good thing.
