The New England Patriots received two compensatory draft picks, including the highest possible selection at the end of the third round, upping their overall haul of 2015 selections to nine.

The club received a third-rounder (97th overall) and seventh-rounder (253rd overall) due to a net loss of compensatory free agents LeGarrette Blount, Dane Fletcher, Brandon Spikesand Aqib Talib in 2014 balanced against signings of 2014 compensatory free agentsBrandon Browner and Brandon LaFell.

This gives the Patriots five of the first 101 picks in the draft, which break down this way:

First round: 32nd overall selection

Second round: 64th overall selection

Third round: 96th overall selection

Third round: 97th overall selection (compensatory pick)

Fourth round: 101st overall (from Tampa Bay)

The team will then have a fourth-rounder (131st overall), while the fifth-rounder was shipped to Tampa Bay in a trade for linebacker Jonathan Casillas, followed by a sixth-rounder and two seventh-rounders.

So.....The Pats have two 3rd round picks and two 4th round picks. Maybe use them to trade up?

Nevermind the trading. Just saw this....Important to note compensatory picks cannot be traded. You can eventually trade player the pick is spent on, but pick itself can't be dealt.

True, but the Pats 3rd rounder and the compensation pick will be back-to-back. The Pats also have the 2nd pick of the fourth round. Pats will have three selections in a 6 pick span - I just don't see Belichick using them, hell, I think he may dish 2 of them and keep the compensatory pick.

He's got some flexibility, that's for sure. Could start stockpiling (the usual) could do a rare first round move. Who knows.

Complicated. Depends on whether we get free agents and owe comp for it (one nullifies the other)
Last year we lost 4 and picked up 2. 4-2=2

They will get compensatory picks for Revis, Browner, Wilfork and Vereen.

Revis will certainly be a third rounder. Wilfork and Browner should be 4th rounders and Vereen a fifth or sixth.

Again, it will make a bit of a difference as to who the Pats sign. Fletcher and Bradley could cost them Vereen and Wilfork or Browner. There are no FA remaining who would offset Revis.

5 picks in the top 100...Now that is awesome for a SB winning team. I can honestly see BB moving around this yr, hopefully up. Going to make for an interesting Friday night for Rd's 2&3.

I don't think Revis is a Comp Pick for you guys. You had to release him so he is not a true Unrestricted Free Agent. Those are the only players that count for or against a team for Comp Picks. A great example is this past year when you guys signed Revis he didn't count against your comp picks because he was released by the Bucs. Otherwise you guys would not have gotten a 3rd this year for Talib.

Actually sorry I was wrong. Revis is eligible to count for a Comp Pick. I guess not picking up an option is not the same as releasing a player. I apologize. Now Wilfork though does not count as a Comp Pick because he was actually released by the team. So right now Vereen, Revis, Akeem Ayers, and Jonathan Casillas are counting for you guys. I think Browner gets canceled out by a couple of other signings. At least according to OverTheCap (they are usually pretty accurate) right now the Patriots are looking to get a 3rd, and 3 6th round picks. Obviously there are still plenty of players to be signed so that can all change in a hurry and obviously the formula goes beyond just the contract to actual playing time, playoff impact, and if a player makes the pro bowl.
