Gee … I dunno, other than get a mediocre program back to relevancy in two years (2012) to lose to one of the best Bama team ala Saban.

Then gets a little school back into the CFP playoffs this year after having a really tough go for prior season or two. He figured it out with his coaching staff and made very significant revelations in himself and staff … made the needed changes and voila.

Now, tell me what some of these others you've listed accomplishments are after I've enlightened you to some of Kelly's.

Your hate is beyond obvious, dude.

The fact that he had NOTRE DAME, one of college footballs most storied programs finishing 4-8 in any season is a huge knock.

He didn't just lose to Bama in 2012, he got destroyed, and all of those wins have been vacated.

He again got destroyed in the playoffs this season.

5 on my list have natties. Kirby and Riley are widely considered to be the two best coaches without natties. James Franklin took over a team under big time sanctions and has been a great recruiter, beat out a great Urban Meyer team and went on to win the B1G, and took VANDY to back to back 9 win, ranked seasons. Dan Mullen turned MISSISSIPPI STATE into a really solid program and just lead Florida to a top 10 season after they were a complete shit show just last season. And Chris Petersen took Boise State to places no mid major had ever been before, and now has Washington as perennial favorites in the Pac, including two Pac titles and a playoff appearance.

Who are you dropping?

Normally I'd wait for the end of the NCG for this thread, but I don't think any outcome will have an impact the top 2.

My list:

1. Nick Saban- He's the GOAT
2. Dabo Swinney- Has a natty, going into his third NCG, all at a non blue blood
3. Jimbo Fisher- Say what you will, but he has a natty, and he hasn't been out of the game for an extended period
4. Kirby Smart- Great recruiter, has Georgia playing to their potential, hasn't been able to top Saban, but not many have.
5. Lincoln Riley- Great offensive mind. Two season, two playoff appearances, two Heisman winners
6. Chris Petersen- Great all around coach. Has Washington more relevant than they've ever been in my lifetime.
7. Les Miles- He's gotta a big job ahead of him, but I think he can get Kansas to relevancy. Has a natty, would be higher if he hadn't been away for a few years.
8. Mack Brown- Same as Les, a lot of work to do, but would be higher if not for the years he's been off the job.
9. James Franklin- Gets some well deserved criticism, but has done a fine job bringing Penn State back from where they were after the worst scandal in sports history. Great recruiter. Urban's gone, he has an opening.
10. Dan Mullen- He built Mississippi State into a respectable program, and that's saying something, and improved Florida's win mark by 6 games over last season, and that's with a brain dead QB.

HM: Mike Leach, Brian Kelly, David Shaw, Mark Stoops(9 wins at Kentucky is impressive), Dino Babers, Jim Harbaugh, Tom Herman, Mark Dantonio, Ryan Day(fully expect him to be safely on this list after next season, but can't include him when he hasn't been a HC before save a few games for Urban's suspension), Pat Fitzgerald, Doug Patterson

Please archive and save your list for Scott Frost, respectfully please and thank you. I noted that I didn't see him in your Top 3, and that distressed me deeply. So when the end of next season rolls around, I'd like some relief, if you don't mind.

Sincerely yours,

The Nupist.

Natties are a big deal so I'll not argue much on that.

You seem to just overlook all the BS mediocre years ND endured under Davies, Willingham & Weis. ND was a laughing stock. Kelly brought them back to national prominence - whether you like to admit that fact … or not.

Your list of 'accomplishment' for what you've stated could easily be bestowed upon Kelly's resume, also. Your hatred is blinding ya, son.

Of couse, then I remember when you were born. It's hard for you to really realize all those lean years for the Irish I've discussed.

Cmon … in comparison to some of those you've listed vis/vis Kelly … it just comes off as a 'popularity' contest with you.

And KMA for you making me 'defend' Kelly, but I'm a realist and been an observer of this game a lot longer than most. lolz

It's a forum for discussion.

I'm just curious what your list would be.

I'm not making a list.

I'm just laughing at yours … for the most part.

You prolly wouldn't have gotten any flack from me prior to this season Kelly has managed to put together - much to the surprise & pleasing of the Irish faithful.

One doesn't win a COY(s) for nothing. Give credit where credit is due and forego your obvious disdain for the guy (and I guess the program).

Kelly is more deserving than what your proclaiming … deal with that.

Just tell me who you're taking off to put Kelly in.

He was the second HM listed. He didn't get an HM at all when I did this thread last season.

A lot of talk, but so far, I've only seen one other poster make a list.

Why would anyone consider Brian Kelly a top 10 coach after tonight? His best team just got schalacked by Clemson and was never in the game.

They were totally in the game until they lost three key D players within minutes and Clemson quickly exploited that void.

You're being disingenuous, IMO.

They were ‘IN’ the game correct. As in they made it, and played in it.

And lost THREE key defensive players … within minutes.

You seem to have overlooked that … along with a 12-0 & #3 ranked season.

We'll not mention the Irish's last two bowl appearances and who they defeated, huh? Might that have something to do with your 'observation' of tonite's game?

And Mante Teo lost a fake girlfriend before the 2012 title game season. I get it, things just happen to the Irish in big games that the Head Coach isn’t responsible for. Still a reflection on him.

Run along, Ref, and grab some straws from the nearest Piggly Wiggly after a BS comment like that.

Kelly had a chance at 2 major games, lost by a combined total of 72-17. Not a big time coach when you can’t coach in big time games.

Who cares about coach of the year awards? Guys like Ferentz and Gus have won that award.

And that's my biggest knock against him, but he's gotten the Irish back to national relevance - whether you like that or not.

ND is a small, private school. They don't have an enrollment of 30K+ to be able to choose from … let alone set some of the highest academic/graduation standards in the nation.

That's what we have to compete with, but don't let those inconvenient facts get in the way of what's been a pretty damn successful tenure/resume in bringing back a team from mediocrity.

Scott Frost won a National Title with less.
